Why people don't like the news:

NEWS: If we take a side we can make people change their minds about politics.
PEOPLE: I'm sick of the news skewing their stories, insulting my political views and trying to con me into changing my opinion. I'm ignoring them.

NEWS: When we tell people about carnage and destruction and that all our viewers/listeners/readers going to suffer and/or die, they'll watch more.
PEOPLE: I'm sick of the news being about bad stuff all the time. I'm ignoring them.

NEWS: People love the Internet and if we make ourselves like the Internet people will love us too! Run those "President Obama Chews Bubble Gum" and "Jonas Bros Favorite Desserts You Can Serve Your Family" stories.
PEOPLE: Where's the reports on Darfur and the Middle East?! The news is just a bunch of goofy nonsense. I'm ignoring them.

hrm, I'm not sure why I'm bothering, but point one isn't news, it's advertising. Look at how stories are sourced and who was invited to comment. Point two is just fucking weird, and makes me wonder if you watch lots of TV news. People do whine about all the news being "bad" but I've done content counts (print media) and the numbers don't hold up - people simply remember disasters better. Point three seems to largely run counter to point two, saying that soft, fuzzy feature shit is horrible, and that you would rather have disaster reporting on Darfur and Palestine.
If your point was that people in general are fractious, have a tiny attention span and almost no ability to parse what they see and read, nor to comprehend its place in the reality, then yay! Otherwise...

Here is why I don't like the news:

Reporters often draw false parallels in the name of balance, and report "both" sides of a story without investigating if either side is actually true.

RomancingTrain - 2009-06-21

Now tell me why people don't like airline food.

glendower - 2009-06-20

This is just sad. Hang in there mega-papers.

dueserpenti - 2009-06-20

That's pretty much how I feel about newspapers.
