Link is fucked. I got the intro cutscene to Warcraft 2 instead.

memedumpster - 2009-06-23

What's sad is I always felt that this was an absolutely pointless cartoon, but was willing to accept that it might make a good, finite, movie... until I saw who was doing it.

Now I feel bad for the cartoon and feel that what little it had to offer, even though I can't name any of those things, is about to get cheapened further.

M. Night Shyamalan will somehow embarrass a mass produced, derivitive, wholly forgettable, anime.

ASubmarineSandwich - 2009-06-23

I'm still divided on this movie. This is, after all, a teaser.

As for the cartoon, it is indeed a children's cartoon, and I'd dismissed it as much for the longest time-- the weeaboo fantasy of Americans aping their favorite Japanimation to turn a profit with the overlords at Nickelodeon who wanted to connect to the inscrutable Asian fascination that took the children by storm in the Americas in the last decade or so.

Finally, after a friend of mine kept pestering me to give it a shot, I finally did. And to my surprise, it didn't entirely suck. Again, it's a kids cartoon. But it also has a surprisingly rich backstory, complicated themes (death, genocide, moral ambiguity, absentee parents, civil disobedience, Orwellian censorship, the convoluted nature of loyalty). The characters are perhaps somewhat one dimensional, but with all serials over time even those become well-rounded.

So, in short, I've become a fan of the show, and wouldn't mind my children watching it someday. I just hope what I liked about the cartoon isn't distorted into the "y'all like hotdogs? That plant's gonna kill me! LOOKOUT CREEPY DOLL! I AM THE AUTHOR AND ONLY I CAN SAVE THE WORLD" tendencies that Shyamalan has been lapsing into lately.

takewithfood - 2009-06-24

I had a similar experience, actually. I'm impressed that the creators and writers actually give kids some credit that they'll follow a steadily advancing metaplot and accept strong female characters. The voice acting is very impressive, too, considering that they mostly used actual kids (the lead role was voiced by a 12 year-old).

And the show did amazingly well with people of all ages and genders. The movie, however, will be a spectacular flop. For those not already aware, they've already alienated their entire fanbase by hiring all white actors to play "the good guys" (when the roles are arguably Tibetan, Inuit and Chinese), and hiring darker-skinned actors (hilariously including Aasif Mandvi, the Daily Show correspondant) to play "the bad guys".

Lurchi - 2009-06-23

Good going there, Night.

Udderdude - 2009-06-23

It is not a good thing that the kid swinging around that pole reminded me immediately of star wars kid.

mashedtater - 2009-06-23

me too.

Nikon - 2010-06-15

Same here. Avatar, the last Star Wars Kid.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2009-06-23

You gotta be careful when you "bring balance" to anything in a movie. If Yoda logic is running the show, it means everyone on both sides dies except for one or two dudes.

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-06-23

At least it's not Michael Bay.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2009-06-23

I dunno. Most anime (or in this case, OEL anime) seems to have a lot in common with Bay, but with testicles in place of panties.

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-06-24

Anime at its worst is better than Michael Bay at its best.

mashedtater - 2009-06-23

is that the cartoon with all the toys at walmart?

Bitter with a side of Rice - 2009-06-23

I love the way his name is at the top of the logo, desperately holding on with its fingernails.

joffe b - 2009-06-23

fuck you, asian kids! You can have as many cartoons based on you as the manchildren want, but you'll never get to star in a real movie until you're old enough to play a wacky sidekick.

Urburos - 2009-06-23

This is either going to be very good or very bad. I'm a fan of the show, but I never considered it to be anime in the least. It's well researched, that's all.

Toenails - 2009-06-24

What a concept!

I'm actually agreeing with you, yet I would like to know how a cartoon would constitute as an "Anime" as opposed to a "Weeaboo" version of it (besides the obvious fact that those in charge are American rather than Japanese).

Urburos - 2009-06-24

I guess for anyone who doesn't know what the term weeaboo means, anime serves as a close enough term. I don't think it's weeaboo either, since its not glorifying what its attempting to borrow from. It doesn't pull predictable anime tricks like chibi's everywhere and then give you a moment to go "OHMIGAWDGUYSWASNTTHATGREAT?!" It's just a fucking cartoon. A good one.

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-06-24

Yes it does.

Cleaner82 - 2009-06-23

OoOooooh, because he BENDS AIR... I get it now.

Robin Kestrel - 2009-06-23

Fun fact: much of this movie (i.e., the few parts that aren't completely CGI) was filmed in and around Reading, Pennsylvania.

Cena_mark - 2009-06-23

I'm a fan of the cartoon, wanna make something of it?
I just hope M. Knight Shama lama ding dong doesn't fuck it up.

Wytze! - 2009-06-25

You like shitty cartoons.

sosage - 2009-06-23

What an exciting trailer. A long, drawn out shot of Star Wars kid blowing out candles. A shot of a giant cliff and boats that, right when they do something interesting, we cut away from.

Even if this wasn't based off of a childrens cartoon, it would be embarrassing and boring.

Cena_mark - 2009-06-24

sogayge: Its a teaser, not a true trailer. Teasers are typically like this.

ProfessorChaos - 2009-06-24

This trailer has walked up the wall of cynicism I built regarding this movie. It glanced up at it's tall parapets, constructed out of the love for an enjoyable show that always felt much to short.

The trailer smiled, winked knowingly, and walked away.

The guards on the wall aren't sure what to make of this.

theSnake - 2009-06-24

I don't know shit about the source material but I can tell you this: the movie will be fucking awful.

Lauritz Melchior - 2009-06-24

A friend of mine introduced me to the show, as well. I actually found it quite enjoyable, though I never made it past season 2, I was impressed with what I did see.

ProfessorChaos - 2009-06-24

Season 3 continues to pick up where 2 left off. It keeps getting better. The problem is that the ending of the show is like running off a cliff. Season 3 was the last season, and the show feels like it should have had a 4th season.

Longshot- - 2009-06-24

It was supposed to have a fourth season. This jerk named Night had to go and make this movie cutting the fought season and rushing the end of the third.
Whatever, Avatar was struggling in the end anyways with their random new episodes once every now and again, whenever Nickelodeon felt like showing an episode, usually in other countries, sometimes never in the States. I had to go download that last 5 episodes because of the bullshit Nickelodeon was pulling.

Oh, and the one star is because this jerk Night had to go and ruin a great cartoon. I'm not watching this movie because I want to remember Avatar as a good cartoon.

Jack Dalton - 2009-06-24

He needs to learn that not every shitty idea he comes up with is brilliant just because he had a string of watchable movies early in his career. I remember when he said that "The Happening" was the best b-movie ever on NPR's Science Friday. I'll give him credit though-- it was unintentionally hilarious at the very least.

Toenails - 2009-06-24

So I'm the first one to say it?

Okay, whatever.

WHAT A TWIST!!!

thebaronsdoctor - 2009-06-24

As a grown man who watches children's cartoons I have to say that I never really got in to Avatar. I'm pretty meh about this movie.

StanleyPain - 2009-06-24

A CHOSEN ONE IN A LAND OF BLAH DE BLAH WAR OF DARKNESS BLAH BLAH LOTS OF ENDLESS CG SHOTS OF LARGE THINGS WITH BIRDS FLUTTERING AROUND THEM AND A CHOSEN ONE WHO IS CHOSEN TO BE CHOSEN TO BRING FORTH THE CHOSEN FAAAAAAARRRRRRTTT

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-06-24

I have never seen Avatar. Is it as good as the live action trailer?
