There seems to be a major downside to being a drone.

I'm not seeing it.

Drones stand a good chance of being zapped by an arc welder or blown up by a remote charge.

Pretty rough.

In my experience, most drones end up disintegrated, or die from one of the many common 'our own vehicle slamming right through the building I'm in' accidents.
