I always thought they erred by going more cartoony when they could have gone more disturbingly realistic (Manhunt comes to mind). Cartoony was fun in MK 1-3, but you can't mine anything indefinitely.

MK has all it's appeal based in the on-screen violence. In these day and age it has been greatly surpassed in that area. I tried to play MK2 the other day and it was awful, the controls are so stiff and just akward in every possible sense.

Well, Street Fighter has that one sort-of-important mechanic that helps games last.
