What?

socialist_hentai - 2009-08-15

What?

godot - 2009-08-15

With reference to why there aren't any clips, the effect of the documentary is cumulative. The decaying mansion, the bickering recluses, the photographs of their earlier socialite days, cat shit behind paintings and all night ice cream parties, all of these add up to a sum much more than the individual scenes.

The most interesting part is piecing together a narrative of just what happened in the 40s and 50s to damage these women so. You can't get that from 0:40 second clips.

Needs Maysles tag.

Riskbreaker - 2009-08-15

Ok, i'm getting some of the context, anyone could do a brief summary of what made them go nuts?

cognitivedissonance - 2009-08-15

Basically, Big Edith was the reclusive cat-lady, Little Edie was the paranoid schizophrenic. When the stipend they had been willed from Mr. Beale ran out, they had no job or homemaking skills and just kept on being idle rich even though they were sub-poverty level.

So this is kind of a real life version of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane"? That would be mighty creepy.

cognitivedissonance - 2009-08-16

Basically, only the Kennedys are involved.

kamlem - 2009-08-15

Perhaps the Drew Barrymore telemovie of Grey Gardens would be more poeTV worthy? I haven't seen it yet but it must be awful.

cognitivedissonance - 2009-08-15

It's pretty meh. Drew Barrymore is doing Patty and Selma rather than Little Edie.

pastorofmuppets - 2009-08-16

I see what you did there.

twinkieafternoon - 2009-08-16

It's good, mostly because the story is well written so Barrymore has a lot to work with, and she does all right. I've seen it twice on HBO.

pastorofmuppets - 2009-08-16

There was a musical of this. An award-winning musical of this.

revdrew - 2009-08-16

YES, OF WHICH I POSTED A CLIP FROM AND NO ONE LIKED. :( :( :( :(

Sorry, I'm still bitter.

twinkieafternoon - 2009-08-16

Yes there was, and it was outstanding.

The Townleybomb - 2009-08-16

Honey, I don't like women in skirts, either.

Toenails - 2009-08-16

This actually was recommended by my mother.

I have not been able to watch this movie yet (netflix queue), but GODDAMMIT mom was right.

HankFinch - 2009-08-16

believe!

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-08-17

My friends keep telling me to watch this, and I should listen to them.

Squidmojo - 2009-08-17

These are my cousins. I find this documentary unwatchable.
