ugh.
undeserved pomposity and lists...my favorite things.
And in a side note...Is it just me, or is Tarantino getting more and more like a gay 60s game show host? I expect to see him in the center square in the near future.

Jeff Fries - 2009-08-17

He might have already done Hollywood Squares. Also, The Advocate could do a investigative feature on his sexuality: the gun shop shenanigans in Pulp Fiction, the fact he dated Margaret Cho, etc. etc.

abeli$con - 2009-08-17

lol battle royale is his favorite movie

what a dope

mon666ster - 2009-08-17

lol you're an idiot.

Battle Royale is a great flick. Overall, this is a pretty solid list. He could have gone a lot more pretentious, mentioned some obscure arthouse flicks, but most of the movies he picked are pretty damn good movies.

Rovin - 2009-08-17

Aw, what's wrong abeli$con, still mad because it didn't turn out to be a National Lampoon's property?

chumbucket - 2009-08-17

nah, this guy, like Kevin Smith, has completely gone into the zone of thinking everyone cares anything about what they think

Battle Royale is a good film but nowhere near a top 20 ever.

Also Unbreakable had one of the most disappointingly tacked-on endings I've ever seen since they scrapped Poochie on the Simpsons.

But he's right on about Supercop.

mon666ster - 2009-08-17

I'm never going to the movies with you chumbucket.

Torture the Artist - 2009-08-17

Nobody here or anywhere is offering to take you to the movies.

This is awful and boring and Tarantino's taste has the exact ratio of bland to pretentious that you would expect. Battle Royale wasn't that amazing, guys.

Hooker - 2009-08-17

I'm of the opinion that Battle Royale _was_ amazing. Besides which, pretenders shouldn't be so smug in dismissing it since it comes from the same director as Under the Flag of the Rising Sun and The Yakuza Papers.

sosage - 2009-08-18

I'm also of the opinion that Battle Royale was good, but not that good. Out of the Japanese movies on his list, Audition beats the living shit out of Battle Royale in every single way (he gushes over the build up of Speed?!? SPEED?!?! You had Audition on your list and you discuss great cinematic build up with Speed?!?!?!).

He's also supposed to be super film nerd...I guess I expected a list of things that made me go, "I gotta look that up" not "hrmmm. You say so."

Oh yeah. Drunken Master 2 > Supercop. His last great, old school, no-nonsense kung-fu film that was not all about escapes and stunts. But this isn't my top 20.

He made Pulp Fiction though, which shits on most movies made in the last decade and energized an otherwise very dead independent film scene. So, FART x 5!

duckofdeath - 2009-08-24

mon666ster you are comic book guy. so is quentin tarantino

Rovin - 2009-08-17

Speed for me fell apart at the notion of jumping a bus over such a giant gap, and Unbreakable was HUGELY tedious because it had no sense of pacing whatsoever, but other than that, a good list - or at least, what I've seen of his list.

Lurchi - 2009-08-17

He's right about the Matrix sequels dragging it down. I agree with 3 or 4 others on his list.

boner - 2009-08-17

I just like that a hugely successful director is really the same as other youtube basement-dwellers inside. (You like anything with asians killing each other, we get it already)

Lurchi - 2009-08-17

Pulp Fiction would be on my list.

Camonk - 2009-08-17

God I can't finish this. I literally wish this was twenty ways that Tarantino would like to kill himself, and then he'd pick one at the end and kill himself.

Elvis Hitler - 2009-08-17

^ This

FISTFULLofSOUL - 2009-08-17

^That.

spikestoyiu - 2009-08-17

I'm not going to watch this unless someone can confirm A) he says the word "nigger" and B) jerks off all over a picture of Uma's feet.

Testicles of Doom - 2009-08-18

You get one of these, but I'm not telling which one.

memedumpster - 2009-08-17

There's a remake on his list, this man is dead to me. I'm kidding, but he does have way shallower taste in movies than I expected, at least in American movies. Unbreakable is my favorite Shamanananana movie, though. I normally can't stand his movies. I also liked Signs. Now that I look at my own taste in movies, maybe this guy is deeper than me.

Camonk - 2009-08-17

You're surprised that the guy who made Kill Bill has shallow taste in movies.

This is literally the stupidest thing to ever be surprised about.

13.5 - 2009-08-17

Surprised that the guy who made Jackie Brown likes some really shallow movies? . . . well, no, because he's also the guy that made Kill Bill. But I mean hell, someone asked him to do some movie introduction thing or talk about movies he likes, so he talks. There's a lot of good films in the mix.

Jeff Fries - 2009-08-17

I value Tarantino for his movie choices maybe more than his movies themselves; when he retires he should be a film critic.

craptacular - 2009-08-17

he would make an excellent movie critic.

also... battle royale ? come on.

duckofdeath - 2009-08-24

when he retires, he should go balder and gain 50 pounds and open up a comic book store

Sputum - 2009-08-17

I couldn't call any of those movies bad.
I respect him for not picking anything too pretentious. The man likes action movies, and isn't ashamed of it.

Sort of boring video though.

Hooker - 2009-08-17

Didn't finish and just Googled up the list elsewhere. Dogville is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

CornOnTheCabre - 2009-08-17

wrong

I love how PoE seems to both hate Quentin Tarantino for becoming popular while simultaneously respecting him for not plugging movies that aren't popular.

I think you all just don't like his voice.

Hooker - 2009-08-18

How do you know what movies I have seen?

CornOnTheCabre - 2009-08-18

i don't, but I did make a pretty fair assumption in thinking that every single movie you've ever seen WASN'T groundbreaking, phenomenal, and spoke volumes of the human condition, and that more than a few of these imperfect films were probably quite alot worse than Dogville - which isn't without its flaws, but is certainly worth watching.

then I simplified that to "wrong" because the above is a run-on sentence

Hooker - 2009-08-18

Well, I can see you feel very strongly about this, and so I won't argue. But I feel it's the most hateful movie I've seen from the past 20-30 years at least.

StanleyPain - 2009-08-17

In fairness to Tarantino, since most of his whole persona is absorbing things from movies all throughout the 60s and 70s and then recycling them in some fashion or other for his own movies, having to pick movies from after 1992 must have been one of the hardest things he's ever done. I'm guessing a few he just threw in for good measure.

andyweak - 2009-08-18

As pretentious as he is I do enjoy hearing what relevant directors give credit to. And yes I did say he is relevant although I have yet to Inglorious Bastards.

CornOnTheCabre - 2009-08-18

I still don't see how he came across as pretentious. This is probably the least pretentious of a list you'll find from any given director, let alone one who used to be a video store clerk.

CornOnTheCabre - 2009-08-18

except maybe Michael Bay, who would probably list all of his own movies for this

duckofdeath - 2009-08-24

it's like some big producer went to comic-con, closed his eyes and picked the first fan boy he ran into and said, "you get to make movies!"

he sounds exactly like that kid on the 5 year associates degree program, trolling his community college's computer lab, arguing with his friends about the validity of anime sequels or some shit

duckofdeath - 2009-08-24

also, he fucked margaret cho. allegedly.
