That last one absolutely made my night. This guy is not gunshy.

Considering he majored in geology and that these people are trying to "educate" him otherwise about his main area of expertise, it's not surprising. I don't support the belittling of the average religious guy or gal, but I think people like this who try to tread upon and spread deceit in legitimate scientific fields deserve the sort of response like this that they get.

I will now donate 50 dollars to Not Yahtzee.

Thank you sir. You will never know how much you can make a difference in the lives of people.

When I was a boy by the time I reached school I'd pretty much been force fed creationism (lol, Midwest) as how things worked. Even from early on I always had questions, since something(s) didn't quite make sense. I remember the insistence that the earth was 6000 years old as something especially unsettling to a young me. It felt like a person was expected not to ask any and just accept this. Tremendous social pressure. To just breathe in the fumes and be like everybody else.

Thanks to several teachers and books I no longer felt ashamed to question what amounts to ancient fairy tales.

It is really depressing how many people never question, and just buy it all, hook line and sinker.

It's not because it means they're wrong, it's because it means that everyone they know or trust is wrong. Who's going to be the first person in a congregation to support evolution and get castigated from the community?

My favorite thing about these guys is how they have no scientific training, but feel perfectly confident in applying whatever knowledge and training they do have to just denying it all based on their own bizarre logic. Me, when I hear something scientific that I don't understand, I don't dare try to question it until I've at least learned something about the principles at work.

I agree, watching someone who probably knows how to change his sparkplugs and thinks that makes him a scientist is just amazing to watch. I checked out GoodScienceForYou's profile. Here's a few choice bits of a man who clearly doesn't get it:

"I am a person who has learned how to learn and to keep HEMG (human emotional mental garbage) away from me as much as possible, so that I can be a free thinker. Believe it or not; you can study all that man has learned and not believe in logical fallacies if you know how to recognize them."

"People call me the "teacher's teacher"; "Renaissance man"; "ass hole, liar"; and other concepts that they project on me. Most loving people who are not believers in HEMG are treated badly by society. I spent 17 years in Yoga to get free of delusions."

"I study science and everything far away from the intense need of others to tell me how to think or how to learn."

Especially when their reasoning boils down to, "this is too complicated for me to understand with zero education on the subject, therefore it must be wrong"

dicktatortot - 2009-09-05

I agree, I too was told not to question and when I did man did I get into trouble, hit even.

Then one day my grandfather gave me a book on the big bang. Then I went out and bought one about palaeontology. I was like ten. Opened a whole new world to me...never showed mother though, not even to this day.

Now she's all like Jesus and Ritalin. I tell her it's a good name for a punk band. Pisses her right off!
