"Improvisational athletic theater," is my term for it. Check out "Steel Chair to the Head," edited by Nicholas Sammond. It's a collection of critical scholarly essays that investigate and define pro wrestling from anthropological and psychological perspectives. One of the writers used to be a wrestler and wrote an essay on how logic works in a match. It's a delightful read.

Any sport with a lot of money circulating is always corrupted in one way or another. Arranged box matches, arranged olympic medals, football matches, etc etc. If i'm going to watch something previously arranged, and reharsed, at least i want it to be fun.
