5 stars for Dark Star.

Minus infinity for the terrible, insulting description.

snothouse - 2009-10-06

I didn't know the Allmans meant so much to everyone!

mouser - 2009-10-06

Suggested description:

«Human kind must seek out and destroy unstable planets»

snothouse - 2009-10-06

Yeah, but that's not very funny.

Wombles - 2009-10-09

Desc: They're not lost in space, they're loose.

Barely makes sense, pretty funny.

Merzbau - 2009-10-06

No John Carpenter tag?

And yeah, that description...not so much.

Riskbreaker - 2009-10-06

This is John Carpenter in great form, for a low budget 35 year old flick it has dated way better than most sci/fi films of the time.

Colonel Cowlung - 2009-10-06

Don't forget Dan O'bannon.

Cena_mark - 2009-10-06

And don't forget that it was also the inspiration for Red Dwarf.

Desidiosus - 2009-10-06

And Alien, which was obviously a lot less frightening when the monster was a giant balloon.

Cube - 2009-10-06

They hadn't processed the commander's voice yet!

phalsebob - 2009-10-06

Was the 70s the last decade of the truly great Sci Fi film. Blade runner was '82, Terminator was '84 (which was more a suspense than Sci Fi film) and I can't think of much after that. Maybe I'm just a cranky old bastard.

Anyway, Dark Star was damn fine, Mr. Snothouse.

pastorofmuppets - 2009-10-06

My list contains Brazil, Aliens, Road Warrior, Jurassic Park, Minority Report and The Matrix.

Bell-bottomed moralizing gave way to PKD adaptations. And occasionally someone pops in to ask for the thousandth time if we're really just a brain in a vat.

phalsebob - 2009-10-06

Yea, but Road warrior was '81... almost the 70's, and post apocalyptic isn't what I call SciFi (although technically it is I suppose). Certainly Aliens was a great space SciFi though.

Michael Houser - 2009-10-06

I love this movie. Trying to talk a sentient bomb out of exploding was one the most brilliant ideas ever.
Sadly, this is one of the few movies that I can get other people to watch. Always lose 'em at the beachball.

Michael Houser - 2009-10-06

*can't get to watch*

Charles - 2009-10-06

I know I lost it at the beachball

dead_cat - 2009-10-06

I lost it at the beachball. But I was somewhere between three and five years old, had no idea what it was**, and was convinced it was trying to kill somebody.

**For some reason, my brain interpreted the alien as some kind of cross between a throbbing gobbet of raw flesh with claws, and an evil strawberry; I know what movie it was from, but the alien in the movie does not match what's in that memory.
There was some fucked-up shit going on with how my eyes interpreted everyday visual stimuli when I was a little kid.

StanleyPain - 2009-10-06

What exactly was this movie ripping off?

And, yes, it's great. If you haven't seen it and are a fan of old-school John Carpenter, it's worth looking for.

Cena_mark - 2009-10-06

The ending was taken from a short Ray Bradbury story called Kaleidoscope, but it works so well in this movie.

Charles - 2009-10-06

That had me confused too. If anything, other movies were ripping off this one.

dead_cat - 2009-10-06

snothouse - 2009-10-06

Okay, if this was made in '74 I saw a lot of:
2001 ('68)
The Prisoner ('67) - The 'evil' orb
Marooned ('69)
etc.
And apparently a Bradbury story.

BUT I DID NOT KNOW THE NERD WATER I WAS TREADING INTO
I'M SORRY THAT THIS TRAILER LOOKS LIKE A TICKET TO GOOFY TOWN.
DEAR GOD if you like this movie, it's cool.

Cena_mark - 2009-10-06

You only saw the trailer shit-trailer? You did not tread into deep nerd water, you're drowning in it.

Ursa_minor - 2009-10-06

The band Pinback is also named after the character "Pinbacker", and their first album samples this movie heavily.

Xenocide - 2009-10-06

I used to be a great surfer. Before....the beard.

And then a beach ball raped me.

Gwago - 2009-10-06

Your MOM is loose. ZING!!

Emcee - 2009-10-06

Great film. It actually *stars* Dan O'Bannon, of course.

Dan O'Bannon seems to have a fixation for eternal, conscious death.

Syd Midnight - 2009-10-06

Sgt. Pinback is the character every sci-fi show and movie needs but doesn't have.

Bort - 2009-10-06

With Richard Kind as the sentient bomb! (Not really, but damn if it doesn't sound like him. I had to look it up to be sure.)

TeenerTot - 2009-10-06

Return to Bombay.

memedumpster - 2009-10-06

I loved this movie when I was a kid, beach ball and all.

zatojones - 2009-10-06

the book was good

Wasn't there a Pinback in Danny Boyle's Sunshine?

The insane monster guy who was the captain of the Icarus 1?
