Nifty, but completely misses the point of playing a tabletop pen & paper RPG.

dementomstie - 2009-10-20

Well, it's faster than using the maps that you have to draw yourself, and it's less likely to fall apart than the dungeon tiles, but I want to roll a d20 of my own, not a virtual one. What happens when the virtual d20 keeps rolling low? You can't swap it out for a different, better one. That's the entire reason I have 4 d20s, when one runs out of 20s I switch to another one.

Binro the Heretic - 2009-10-20

See? This guy understands!

Boxhead - 2009-10-20

This is cool. I see great futures for my 10k dollar tabletop board game.

It will be pretty awesome when these things come into a human price point. I already use my laptop a ton for DM'ng. Now to work on my justification arguments.

cognitivedissonance - 2009-10-20

Yes. He understands everything except the Gambler's Fallacy.

Camonk - 2009-10-20

It's more that I can't throw a virtual die at a dude's head.

pastorofmuppets - 2009-10-20

The solution is that everyone has their D20 iPhone app, and you put the phone down on Surface and roll the die on your phone.

Speaking of which, how awesome would Surface Mario Party be?

Camonk - 2009-10-20

I ain't throwin' a three hundred damn dollar iPhone at a dude's head.

Pillager - 2009-10-20

^^^

But the iPhone will hurt more than a d20...

Syd Midnight - 2009-10-22

Some guys were willing to roll a die 2000 times to see if they're naturally off balance, but I wasn't so I got a library book on Las Vegas casinos and learned how to shave my D20s.

Gmork - 2013-01-10

iPhone does 10d8 damage

Robin Kestrel - 2009-10-20

This seems like it should be a lot more exciting. I mean, I know it's just a proof of concept, but it is just so ugly and clunky that it sucks any bit of imagination and joy out of the game, at this point.

That guy - 2014-12-10

much like 4th edition

pastorofmuppets - 2009-10-20

That circular menu is straight bad-ass. I can't say how fun it would be (especially since I don't play D&D) but all of the design work is awesome.

pastorofmuppets - 2009-10-20

In fact, whenever a video shows up here from vimeo I know that it's going to be something pretty.

phalsebob - 2009-10-20

I imagined that tabletop RP was dead, but this might be a thing. Now all I need are four friends who want to spend friday night in a basement and eat pizza and drink mountain dew.

Boxhead - 2009-10-20

Depending on your age (college kids not so much) you would maybe be surprised at how many people are looking for a structured reason to hang and bullshit and drink with their buddies, especially on friday nights. We all get tired of poker sometimes.

Urburos - 2009-10-20

Am I getting drunk? If there are any girls there I want to do them.

pastorofmuppets - 2009-10-20

It's completely possible to get drunk and play dice without making someone draw maps first.

Aelric - 2009-10-20

This is impractical as hell for anyone except the very rich or stores that offer playspace and then they would have to start renting time to recoup their cost, resulting in a severe drop in folks that actually play there. Just stick to PnP and use a laptop or tv for your fancy little video supplements if you really need them that bad.

Naugaskins - 2011-03-24

Would this mean that you couldn't rape a half of a corpse that you found in a dungeon?

Old_Zircon - 2012-09-28

I can't wait to see how the porn industry uses this kind of technology.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-10

What's the point? They've already got tons of online PnP environments; Roll20, internet forums, hell even Google Hangouts. Forget "proof-of-concept"; you can go play a tabletop game on your PC right this very evening, if you were so inclined.

I guess it might be cool if you actually want to have some of your friends over to your house to play an old-school, face-to-face PnP game, but in that case, what's the point of the table? Why not just use a map? Or your imagination?

EvilHomer - 2014-12-10

Another problem I have is that it looks like this system is going to be very clunky and restrictive; it will look pretty, but it will be more video game than tabletop, and it'll be difficult (if not impossible) to play anything other than the system it's designed to handle. Computer-based PnP environments should be simple, yet robust - they should provide a flexible framework around which a DM can work his vision, not a bunch of drop-down menus and pre-coded powers. That's one of the cool things about Roll20: it can easily accommodate any game system which a group might want to run. You could play D&D 5th edition, you could play D&D 2nd edition, you could play Pathfinder, or Vampire, Mechwarrior or GURPS, or even just make up your own. You can run your own houserules or make up everything on the spot, like a real PnP game. All it's concerned about are the dice rolls, the map, and any tokens you might want to put in place; everything else is left up to you.

Watching this demo, it looks these jokers are just trying to make a slightly prettier, and MUCH more expensive, multiplayer version of Temple of Elemental Evil. Lame!!!
