It is surprisingly dark for something on BBC tv in the 50s, so I can understand the controversy, though I like how the British apparently didn't understand the irony of getting the government involved in trying to determine if the adaptation was "proper" for television.

It's not a terrible version, but the attempts to make it "futuristic-y" are what hurt it, though.

It's odd - I imagine Peter Cushing as Winston, whenever I read 1984. I didn't know he had actually been cast in the role. He fits the physical description of Winston pretty bang-on.
