Watch this. His reading of hate mail in part two should be a stand alone clip.

I'm not good at jokes, but as you haven't rated it or commented on it, I'll walk into your cleverly laid trap:

I don't really understand why he thinks the majority of people think Napoleon existed and the world is round because they are facts supported by evidence; we believe them because we are told about them, exactly like a religious persuasion. Everybody has different criteria for what they consider to be a sound argument or proof, and I think he should be more focused on people not having sufficient criteria rather than simply accepting Darwin.

As noble as I think this man is, he has no real understanding of rhetoric.

phalsebob - 2009-11-20

Of course, the words 'opinion' and 'fact' are entirely interchangeable. I don't get why he doesn't get that.

kingarthur - 2009-11-20

Rhetoric be damned. You can verify for yourself the roundness of the earth.

whensaidthemoon - 2009-11-21

True, but how many people have actually done so?

"No one is more dangerous than someone who thinks he has "The Truth". To be an atheist is almost as arrogant as to be a fundamentalist." -Tom Lehrer

I agree 100% with Dawkins, but he REALLY comes off as a total and complete douche bag. He's basically preaching to the converted, so to speak. His fellow atheists see him as some sort of demigod, his opponents see him as a tool of Satan, and the moderate agnostics just see him like Mr. Lehrer does.

*fart*

joelkazoo - 2009-11-22

Well played, Mord!

Mordant - 2009-11-23

It was more than you deserved

joelkazoo - 2009-11-23

And yet, you did it! I feel so honored.

IrishWhiskey - 2013-06-30

It's so arrogant and wrong to not believe in God and treat it as an unevidenced human superstition. People who do so come across as douches who see themselves as demi-gods.

Oh, and horoscopes, fairies and psychics are all obvious frauds. It's ridiculous how people can't pick up on that. It's almost like they apply different standards to the superstitions they are culturally raised to be favorable toward. Trying to pretend that there's a middle ground is just naive. Why can't they see The Truth?

joelkazoo - 2013-07-01

I wrote that comment when I was still in my deconversion phase, and I no longer see him as a douche-bag, but as a guy who simply has no time to deal with out-and-out stupidity. You're right, there is no middle ground, but to take an aggressive stance toward the obnoxiously religious only makes them dig in their heels deeper and causes their followers to think "why should I listen to what this douche has to say"? Once you're completely deconverted, you do see that Dawkins is not a douche-bag, and how amazingly passive-aggressive the religious can truly be.

This is the third part of Dawkin's 3-part documentary "The Genius of Charles Darwin". You can watch the whole documentary at the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation's website (unless they block non-Norwegian IPs)
