This bomb was developed and tested BEFORE the US started sharing nuclear designs with the British (1957 vs 1958). The British demonstrating understanding of the Teller-Ulam design was what spurred us to share our smaller, more efficient bomb designs with them.

Gosh, that was loud. (pardon my prole language).

Desidiosus - 2009-11-30

"Britain is safe"

Fun Facts:
That bomb was 1.8 megatons.
The bomb that leveled Hiroshima was ~15 kilotons.
The soviet union had a One Hundred Megaton bomb.

*this* is why I go to poeTV.

That, and the "Zook" comment right below me.

MrBuddy - 2009-12-01

Yes, but when a Soviet scientist pointed out that the explosion of a 100 megaton nuclear weapon might blast some of the Earth's atmosphere into space they scaled the bomb back to 50 megatons for the test. Well, after they changed their soiled underwear that is.

Repomancer - 2009-12-30

The "Soviet scientist" was Andre Sakharov, the bomb's designer and future dissident.

That'll teach them Zooks.

Thoughts going through a soldier's mind that day:

"Who did I piss off to get this assignment?"
"We're all going to die, aren't we?"
"Right, I just cover my eyes, like that will be enough."
"I should have been a butcher or something."
"OH MY GOD OH MY GOD I CAN SEE THE BONES IN MY HAND PLEASE HELP I DON'T WANT TO DIE... OH my God. Whoa. I hope that doesn't have lasting effects."
"Hey, pretty cloud."

ztc - 2009-12-01

"I am perfectly safe. The Captain said so and he's been to Eton."

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2009-11-30

This is why I honestly can't get too scared about any of the potential end-of-world scenarios they throw around these days. Total nuclear war was just so much more horrible.

garcet71283 - 2009-12-01

And prettier!

Xiphias - 2009-12-07

good thing nukes don't exist anymore!

Runic - 2009-12-06
