I'm not sure which demographic I hate more.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2009-12-10

The answer is obviously the middle of that Venn diagram: Bicyclist Jews.

fatatty - 2009-12-10

Hasidipsters.

GlennFinito - 2009-12-10

stars

revdrew - 2009-12-11

Hasidics. Hipsters are just obnoxious; Hasidics are obnoxious and they have political pull.

baleen - 2009-12-11

Oh no, ethnicity!!!
Oh no, nice clothes!!!!!!

VoilaIntruder - 2009-12-11

Natural enemies of the internet user.

simon666 - 2009-12-10

This is not an original act. I recall as early as 1996 cycles, if not repainting bike lines (it's not often lanes are removed), creating bike lanes on street.

I think this was chronicled in one of these documentaries: "July 25th - The Secret is Out" (1998, 120 min.) or "We Aren't Blocking Traffic, We ARE Traffic!" (1999, 50 min.)

simon666 - 2009-12-10

*cyclists* not cycles

robe - 2009-12-10

yaaaawn, yeah, yeah, rage against the machine, kids. wake me up when you've won.

Anhedonia - 2009-12-10

Does anyone have any info on this? From what I'm reading the lanes were taken out because of crazy jews who don't want girls riding bikes. Really?

Also, the only time I have spent in New York were a few visits to JFK airport awaiting connecting flights. The roving gangs of Hasidic Jews yelling at people were surreal. They were 40+ year old men acting like wanna-be gangsters wearing black robes, funny hats, and huge ass beards. I like to imagine all of New York City is like that.

Tuan Jim - 2009-12-10

what

snothouse - 2009-12-10

It was because the girls were arousing the men with their "immodest dress". For real, that's the reason.

Squeamish - 2009-12-10

"How dare you hot chicks give me a boner!"

Something like that?

Hotwings - 2009-12-11

Jew York City

Rape Van Winkle - 2009-12-11

Hotwings is beauty in simplicity.

augias - 2009-12-10

so now being young and in new york is hipster. *writes it down*

pastorofmuppets - 2009-12-10

That's like half of it, the other half is urban gentrification. It annoys the NYC Jews because they do all the work and the hipsters get all the credit.

simon666 - 2009-12-10

No, being young and promoting one's identity as a commodity is hipster. "We are cyclists. This us. We do things. F-you if you don't like it. Look at me. I do things."

One can't divorce this aspect from the reasonableness of their action, ie: safety reasons. A letter to the editor of the NY Times, fliers around the neighborhood, a blog, would have done fine. A video of the reclaiming-the-bike-lane act is a little unwarranted.

bac - 2009-12-11

Yeah those worthless kids accomplishing something.

Did you just actually put down 'a letter to the editor' as a way to accomplish their goals? Sweet mother of fuck that's funny (and very very sad).

Also, how is them claiming, and pointing out that, the roads do not in fact belong to the people of any particular neighborhood but the city as a whole, promote themselves as a commodity of any sort other than pissed off?

Rape Van Winkle - 2009-12-11

But all credit is issued by Jews. It's a beautiful cycle.

FABIO - 2009-12-12

Being young AND living in Williamsburg most certainly makes you a hipster. You have never set foot there if you deny it.

bac - 2009-12-11

Oh, for fucks sake.

That's culture jamming before it's anything else.

Hipster's don't have the motivation to go through with something like that or anything else that might involve them accomplishing something other then being...whatever the fuck they are.

bac - 2009-12-11

oh dammit they're self-claimed hipsters...I'm fucking confused.

spikestoyiu - 2009-12-11

Apparently the meaning of "hipsters" changes on a daily basis.

zatojones - 2009-12-11

This is a conflict between the long term and short term residents of a neighborhood. In other words, the people who work to make a neighborhood a neighborhood for themselves and, more importantly, their kids versus those who see it as merely a cool place to hang out for a few years until it's time to move back to the suburbs. Now which side do you think should have more say about how that neighborhood looks?

endlesschris - 2009-12-11

Zatojones - it's a goddamn public street. I don't care what you want your neighborhood to look like. Your street leads to other streets, people must occasionally travel down it. Some of these people are on bikes and there is little reason to make them less safe for the sake of ascetics.

bac - 2009-12-11

Not just ascetics, also moral dilemmas caused by women wearing pants.

pastorofmuppets - 2009-12-11

I can't stay silent! :P

It's aesthetics. Asceticism is something different (and incidentally Judaism is one of a handful of religions where it's almost universally looked down upon.

memedumpster - 2009-12-11

Have fun riding your bicycle from the bulldozed remnants of your former dwelling, hipsters!

FABIO - 2009-12-12

These kids really are the most useless people on the planet. Bedford is pretty much entirely composed of trust fund kids who never stop acting like college freshmen. At most they might work 15 hours a week at a thrift store or coffee shop with daddy subsidizing the rest. Eventually the funding and patience runs out and they're forced to move back home for a token position in the family business.
