I want to share a private evening with this man and pick his brain over a bottle of wine.

Embee - 2009-12-22

Err... in the 60s

fluffy - 2009-12-22

You have until 1986.

(This clip would have to be from the 80s since it was clearly taken during or shortly after the production of David Lynch's 1984 film.)

pastorofmuppets - 2009-12-22

I think I'd rather meet his editor. The guy who wrung a genre-defining work out of "water is a metaphor for water" must have known what the hell he was doing.

glasseye - 2009-12-22

Mmmm, Dune.

cognitivedissonance - 2009-12-22

On the one hand, I love Frank Herbert. On the other, he almost single-handedly gave science-fiction over to the fantasists, who have taken out any teeth it may have previously had as a genre about social criticism.

Meh.

pressed peanut sweepings - 2009-12-22

Dune itself wasn't nearly as fantastical as works by later authors that you're referencing. Maybe he was a negative catalyst, but it wasn't his intention. Of course, I think you were implying that anyways. I just get really defensive regarding the guy.

What about the Danger - 2009-12-23

I don't know . . . the books are about a culture that openly embraces eugenics and empire. Technology, information and production have been tightly controlled by oligarchs for thousands of years and the protagonist doesn't think too much about killing billions of people. The guy makes direct comparisons between himself and Hitler at one point.

There isn't too much moral judgement placed on the characters because such criticism really wouldn't have any place in the novel, in the same way that it'd be kind of weird if you had some guy writing enlightenment philosophy during the time of Roman empire.

Needs a 'beef swelling' tag.

pressed peanut sweepings - 2009-12-23

hey, if you were near omnipotent and utterly consumed with the survival of humanity, im sure you would make decisions that would ensure the deaths of billions of people. No glory in leadership. Life totally sucks ass.

Innocent Bystander - 2009-12-23

Ok, that was a joke, right? You honestly don't consider the works of Ursula K. Le Guin or Joanna Russ of having any merit as social criticism?

cognitivedissonance - 2009-12-23

Herbert's contribution to Space Opera led to it eventually becoming the primary mode of popular science fiction.

*retractable neckbeard*

pressed peanut sweepings - 2009-12-22

shit, sorry I didn't mean to rate my own video

Ashenblade - 2009-12-22

It's OK, I did.

MrBuddy - 2009-12-23

You're forgiven (^^^ see above).

Keefu - 2009-12-23

The man who gave us Sex Ninjas and Secret Jews.

pressed peanut sweepings - 2009-12-23

Those Jews in his last Dune novel were kinda out of left field.

PurpleXVI - 2009-12-23

Hey, come now, those weren't just ANY Sex Ninjas, they were Sex Ninjas that could mind control you with SUPER ORGASMS and could fuck 5-year-old clones to make them remember all the memories of their original.

pressed peanut sweepings - 2009-12-23

I think Miles Teg was 10 or 13 or something.
