This must be a very personally rewarding job. I, for one, would volunteer to do it.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2010-01-20

Your body would take one helluva beating though.

splatterbabble - 2010-01-20

It's cool, I wear a foam helmet.

Randroid - 2010-01-20

Maybe if I could use that wrecking ball to hunt down goats.

chumbucket - 2010-01-20

likely Robert Shaw was standing in the back of the room when they discussed who might do this little project

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2010-01-20

Then they splashed the cliff face with water, just to piss it off some more.

charmlessman - 2010-01-20

Slartibartfast is going to be VERY upset!

Camonk - 2010-01-20

Jesus, every job involving helicopters is completely. Fucking. Awesome.

I've wasted my life.

That mountain got HANDLED

Smellvin - 2010-01-20

That's probably the reason it costs about 0k to get enough training for a helicopter pilot's license (yes, I looked it up): there's so much demand.

Dicknuts - 2010-01-21

I'd say rotary-wing costs about double that of a fixed-wing license. Mostly because helicopter rental fees are so much higher. About -K. Doing something like this though, yeah, military is about the only way to afford the training.

My dad was just in the hospital and from his room I'd watch the medivac helicopters taking off and landing and think how sad and lame my life has been.

kiint - 2010-01-20

DONT FUCK WITH ME CLIFF!

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2010-01-21

Obviously this was a long time coming...that cliff probably killed that dude's parents in an alley one time.

kingarthur - 2010-01-20

OK, so what are they trying to accomplish exactly?

RockBolt - 2010-01-20

They are knocking down (technical term: scaling) the loose rocks above the highway in a controlled manner. They have to do this everywhere that there are steep rock faces above roads, although its usually a bit less spectacular than this. No matter the method, they'll close the road every once in a while and drill, blast, or otherwise dislodge loose rock then clean it all up at once instead of waiting for it to fall on its own and pancake a few cars below

kingarthur - 2010-01-20

Leave it to RockBolt to know things about this sort of stuff.

Tuan Jim - 2010-01-20

And the water was to get the loose stuff that would have made it's way down the next time it rained?

RockBolt - 2010-01-20

A good drench of water should knock down any of the smaller pieces clinging to the edges or under where the big slabs fell off, hopefully. Ideally you would have drillers, breakers, and/or high pressure water sprays up on the wall doing this close and personal (or even by HAND > http://tiny.cc/rock468), but at those heights and with how unbelievably unstable that huge thing was, this wrecking ball heli approach is likely the only option here.

While you could use artillery of course, but that would end up doing more damage and introducing more fracturing to that rock face, when all you want to do is knock down the loose pieces. Explosives are excellent for this type of thing, but you really need to drill and place precision charges with precise timing to take down the bad stuff without busting up the solid stuff too.
