It actually goes back way, way farther than that. Red hair among the ancient Egyptians was a sign of the favor of Set, the major baddie of their religion, and thus bad joo-joo. Loki, Norse trickster god, was depicted as having red hair. Judas Iscariot was represented in the medieval Passion Plays by a red wig, as identifiable shorthand to the audience as to who to boo at.
