etc.

BorrowedSolution - 2010-02-09

The lady asking the question sounds black.

zatojones - 2010-02-09

How can you be sure? Oh when will we all just be color deaf?

Camonk - 2010-02-09

I love you, Gibbsy.

MongoMcMichael - 2010-02-09

Pffft. A REAL pro like Scott McClellan would've answered such a difficult question with a hearty 'no comment'.

Urkel Forever - 2010-02-09

To be fair, he didn't let her finish the question: "What is the President's thought about slavery especially since...he is black?"

Spastic Avenger - 2010-02-09

Obama is from East Africa. Other than in the odd, homogenised view of African cultures and peoples (sadly helped by afrocentric movements within the US and also by segregationist policies) he has no historical relation or connection to the Transatlantic Slave Trade. It relied on the kingdoms of West and Central Western Africa (mostly the Benin Edo kingdom, the Yoruba kingdoms of Ibadan and Ijaye and the kingdom of Kongo) to provide the infrastructure and export capacity for the industrial movement of peoples from the interior (or neighbouring states) to the coast. It has no connection to East Africa whatsoever; that area had a totally different economy.
This isn't a tirade directed at you per se: It jsut seems time we outgrew colonial visions of Africa as vast and undivided.

positively - 2010-02-09

Spastic, we're all impressed that you know so much about Africa, but you're ignoring the fact that the cultural implications of "blackness" and "whiteness" have nothing to do with genealogy or geographics. I know people who are Phillipean yet have to simultaneously negotiate distinct public identities as "the asian" and "the latino" depending on what environment they're in.

Urkel Forever - 2010-02-09

I don't believe any of the things that Spastic Pretentious PC man swooped down from his Eternal Tower of Defending the Oppressed Peoples of the World from the Dreaded Colonialists to ascribe to me.

The joke actually was just that I can't imagine how she intended to complete that question and sound any better. I've been lurking this page forever, and I've always noted the forum enforcers of things they heard in Anthropology 101.

phalsebob - 2010-02-09

East Africa is in Hawaii.

Spastic Avenger - 2010-02-09

Phalsebob spotted my totally dumb mistake.

Urkel, you wouldn't hear this in Anthro 101. It would at least be in 102. 101 is usually about the Pacific and exchange mechanisms in the Kula ring.

chortle chortle chortle.

Spastic Avenger - 2010-02-09

I reread your comment, and I concur that I am an idiot. This is also confirmed by the post at the bottom of this page.

phalsebob - 2010-02-09

It's ok. It's hard around here to know if someone is playing along with a joke or just being a tool.

frau_eva - 2010-02-09

Dubya wouldn't apologize because Africans owned slaves? Except that 'slavery' in Africa was largely much more like indentured servitude. You'd work for someone for a few years to pay off the debt, then go back to your family. One of my old Sociology professors actually was a 'slave' when he grew up in Kenya.

And no, I didn't learn this in Anthro 101. I have a degree in it. My doctoratez, let me show you them.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2010-02-09

frau eva is also a bouncer part time

Spastic Avenger - 2010-02-10

I just spotted something; nobody from Urkel onwards noticed we would have learned this in ETHNOLOGY 101.

I'm going to kick myself.

positively - 2010-02-09

I hate Robert Gibbs. He's a shallow, smug prick. The question was asked by a progressive black reporter and was trying to call attention to the fact that Obama is in a unique position to be the first American president to publicly apologize for slavery on behalf of the American people. Gibbs ducked it and laughed at her.

Smellvin - 2010-02-09

I find it odd that people can apologize for things that not only did they not do, but their ancestors weren't even in the same hemisphere at the same time as said goings-on. Nevertheless, if it makes people happy at zero cost, he should probably do it.

phalsebob - 2010-02-09

Dear Slaves,

Sorry.

Cherio!
Barack Obama.

Chibisuke - 2010-02-09

I hope we get a jewish president soon, so he can apologize for the holocaust.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-02-09

I haven't seen a WH press secretary that I didn't think was a huge prick. It just comes with the territory.

ztc - 2010-02-09

stars for chibisuke

Xenocide - 2010-02-09

The holocaust apology is a job for Germany's first Jewish Chancellor:

Dear Dead Jews,

Yeah, that was a bad couple of years, huh? The German government, in association with the rest of the world's insistence on continuing to shame us, would like to issue a great big mea culpa on this whole mess. Especially the whole fake shower thing. Not cool, guys.

At least you got free tattoos, am I right? Don't pretend those didn't get you survivors lots of pity lays after the war. I've heard my uncle's stories.

Anyway, we will now play a pounding techno remix of "Amazing Grace" to honor your memories.

Sorry!

Schlomo Von Strudleberg, Chancellor of Germany

Richmond - 2010-02-09

Or Angela Merkel.

Im just happy "are you fucking kidding me?" is a linked tag now.

yeahjim - 2010-02-09

Maybe we can just get a few public positions in place that are responsible (24-7) for apologizing to affected parties in the case of every major tragedy throughout recorded history? This sounds like a cool project for the UN.

Tuan Jim - 2010-02-09

Who is this reporter? I remember we've had a few other youtube videos up of Gibb Vs. this reporter.

Spastic Avenger - 2010-02-09

OH SHIT I JUST REREAD YOUR COMMENT. OOPS.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2010-02-10

He and Alex Trebek need to get together and just laugh at people.
