The good part starts at 3:33.

Why did I stay for the end? That was painful.

This is like an SNL skit that goes on a few minutes longer than it has material for.

Bort - 2010-02-14

The difference is, a lot of real-life adults are making this argument in all seriousness, so they're taking that line of thought to extremes to make it exceedingly clear how indefensibly retarded it is.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-02-14

When I saw it I also thought it went on too long. The high point is definitely Aasif's graph showing a "cooling trend" from aug to feb ("a little thing called science").

I wish people weren't making charts like that sincerely and putting them on news channels.

The Daily Show can't do physical comedy and it's always painful when they try.

I didnt watch, but reading that made me laugh and fart at the same time.

5 stars.

I just wish they'd included the part of An Inconvenient Truth where Al Gore pointed out that one of the major tipping points of global warming would be INTENSE LOCAL COOLING (due to a flood of cold water from a now-thawed arctic ice shelf).

Bort - 2010-02-14

Except that you still can't generalize from a single storm, even if it's generalizing in the "right" direction.

For Bort

tldr: How climate translates into weather is very complex, which might be part of the reason you can say "it's snowing, take that Gore" and still have an audience.

El Niņo affects NY winters in the sense that in strong El Niņo years, the winters won't be as cold (AGW models postdict El Niņo becoming more frequent). OTOH, the North Atlantic Oscillation, which you'd expect to have a more direct effect on east coast weather, doesn't seem to, or at least not a straightforward one (AFAIK). They don't pay Hannity to go into that kind of detail, they pay him to avoid it.

So there is a sense in which AGW predicts warm winters for the east coast, but only once you take into account things like: winters are cold, oscillations oscillate, we're talking about a one-tenth of one degree increase, trade winds are crazy, etc, etc. Likewise, cold winters are hard to directly attribute to AGW as well.

fluffy - 2010-02-17

Yeah, I wasn't saying that snowpocalypse was proof of what Gore was saying either, just that all the global warming deniers who say "take that, Al Gore" completely miss that global warming just simply causes all sorts of unpredictable shit to happen, not all of it involving things getting warmer.

Wow. For the life of me, I can't tell if that blog is satirical or real.
