In 1977 or maybe 78, Ian Dury was to do an appearance at KJHK (Lawrence) prior to a concert in town. My father was one of the DJ on the station that was most connected to new music (punk, reggae, early new wave, blah de blah). I was maybe 3 or 4 and loved the song "Sweet Gene Vincent," and my dad figured that it would be a good Dad thing to do to take me to the radio station that afternoon to meet Ian Dury and see some of my parents' friends from the station.
Steve Doocy also worked at the station, and raised a big ol' stink about how inappropriate it was for my dad's wife and son to be at a station event. He tried to bar me from the building.
Ian Dury ended up spending about half of his time there talking to me about what music I liked and his own "li'l nippa."
Then, years later, I saw Doocy call Mr. Rogers 'evil' the day after he'd died.
