Disliking Burning Man is not really about hippies for me. I dislike Burning Man because it is a decadent, nihilistic modernist substitute for the absence of cultural rituals of real impact, the kind that actually cement communities together.

One could say that Burning Man is a kind of carnival, and that carnival itself is an ancient human kind of ritual, but what kind of Carnival takes place out in the desert, with a many hundreds of dollars entrance fee, effectively cutting it off from everyone except rich white people? Burning Man represents, in my mind, everything wrong with contemporary middle class and upper middle class culture - it is expensive, alienated, decadent and almost entirely pointless when it comes to the greater problems of the human race, but it is done up in a glitzy veneer of substance and art - one big and obvious enough to satisfy its attenders that their lives have some kind of substance in the intervening time between each event.

Burning Man, in other words, seems like a bunch of kids with no direction in life and too much free time and money running out into the desert once a year to party amidst spectacle. Seems pretty contemptible to me.

And sitting around commenting extensively on the internet is obviously the opposite. As perhaps the only POETV fucker who has been there (2007) and dragged there expecting to hate it by friends, I was overwhelmingly surprised by the lack of what you say. You have a point, the majority of the folks are just rave kids getting drunk, but almost all the artists had proper regular jobs and were venting steam with it, not to mention, what exactly is wrong with being a directionless young fucker who is worthless to the world. if that really is the case, then they might as well have fun before they kill themselves jumping off a roof for a youtube video. you can ignore burning man pretty easily, and if you can ignore it, then it's not hurting you, therefore, it's not worth bitching about if you don't like it.

Quick P.S. If your problem is with bon-vivant artist types and hipster douchebags acting like their shit don't stink, they are easy to avoid. I hate the pretension myself. You's be surprised how many simple factory dudes show up to the place. Try it, then you can hate it.

Yeah, there are hippies. You probably have hippies in your town and or home - it's cool, they sometimes die of thirst or exposure for not being prepared. Because us rich ass white folks can afford to blow a few grand on supplies and shit for a week long vacation to a place where no life can grow.

The hard drugs thing was surprisingly a misconception in my time there. Sure, it was there, but most folks were no drunker or experimenting with anything they wouldn't on a typical Friday night. Hell, you might be surprised by the simple lack of weed in some areas of the event, by choice of the camps in the area. It's a tad sad that it is so misinterpreted, cause I think anyone that goes there, even stone cold sober, could find something worth their time.
