Actually this really only works if you've got a hitchhiker's thumb. I was never able to master the around-the-thumb techniques because of my straight-as-an-arrow thumb configuration.

Nevertheless, I was able to master the around-the-index-finger technique which is arguably harder.

I've tried to learn. I can twirl drumsticks all day long, but I just fling pencils all over the room.
