Why in God's name would you be proud to claim descent from Preston Brooks? He beat an unarmed man within an inch of his life while his buddy threatened to shoot anyone who intervened. Why? To defend the institution of slavery.

Also, he was a congressman, not a senator.

And then, when someone called him on it and challenged him to an actual duel where both parties would be armed, he wussed out.

Even better, after the Seargent-at-Arms confiscated his walking stick, his constituents sent him hundreds more, and he continued in office for a few more terms.

The slavery thing's not so great, but if more politicians would beat each other to the floor, we might have fewer problems with our majority/minority issues at the moment.
