He was probably just being nice. I don't think anyone could have seen Jon Stewart becoming as influential as he has. Or maybe Carlin is just that wise.

Just want to say Jon Stewart once played a clip of himself on MTV in like '92 and he looked 20 years old. It was really weird seeing college Jon, it was like CGI
