It is amusing to read his take on Hunter Thompson. He dismisses him as simply some white guy who was really into LSD.
This man was responsible for enciting a riot in los angeles, and then defending those arrested in court, all while his flotilla of child-brides were in the courtroom posing as his 'nieces'
Honestly, comparing HST's work before and after Strange Rumblings/Fear and Loathing, "a white guy who loved acid" is a pretty accurate and concise summation of his character.
I'm going to have to look this book up. The book I've read where I learned the most about OZA was a general history of 60s-70s new journalism and it made him sound like a slightly wetbrained publicity freak.
I think it is as self aggrandizing and hyperbolic as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, similar tone too.
Although that this man was an actual pedophile and disappeared under suspect circumstances in the caribbean (as in, out on the water) makes theweird vicious caricature he makes for himself possibly less of a hyperbole.
Of course, I am self aggrandizing and I love hyperbole so whatever.
Revolt of the Cockroach People is actually a pretty good book if you're remotely interested in Chicano literature from the 70s and a little slice of what life was like for Acosta as a lawyer in those days.
