urbanelf - 2010-04-25

No idea that sinfullysara is afrikaans.

rural - 2010-04-25

Misleading! There have been poor uneducated dutch farmers in southern Africa since the eighteenth century (in some regions, they predate the current black African population). This trend of making news documentaries about "changing circumstances" using them as an example is ridiculous. It would be like suggesting that there were no poor uneducated white farmers in the South before emancipation.

The Anglo/Israeli/German communities, on the other hand, who were not primarily agricultural (mining, etc.) and who were not completely abandoned by the colonizing powers (most still have two passports) are still doing just fine, thank you.

Chancho - 2010-04-25

The whites will slowly dwindle to nothing as the young people leave for other countries. The old people are staying behind because they don't want to leave their homes. In 20 years they will be irrelevant.

rural - 2010-04-25

And by that time, the country (and hence most of southern Africa) will be a complete and utter disaster area.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2010-04-26

wait what

um.

Yes, I think you may have lost points. In fact I'm deducting them.

rural - 2010-04-26

Do you have a more optimistic prognosis? In case you hadn't been following the news, the ANC is on an express train to Mugabetown. The future of the country has nothing to do with race and everything to do with politics.

baleen - 2010-04-26

And don't forget, an army that has AIDS...

frau_eva - 2010-04-25

"But some don't need the help from the government..."

Yeah, except that they wouldn't allow you to get the education to become an engineer unless they outright told colleges that they had to prefer blacks. The idea that tomorrow a college or job or anything else is going to choose only whites one day and the next day must be totally racially unbiased is ludicrous. Let me shed a single shining tear for the small amount of people who lost jobs that they pretty much couldn't have possibly screwed up before.

fermun - 2010-04-26

Precisely. The entire point of affirmative action is to give preferential treatment to qualified minorities to allow them to overcome institutionalized racism. His wife got her MBA in the states and so had less affirmative action treatment, but if he got his degree locally, he benefited and the goal was achieved. His children will lead better lives due to his economic stability.

Africa = Bizzaroland

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2010-04-26

I saw this a few weeks ago. It is captivating. The entire country is just filled to the brim with resentment on all sides. But I feel bad for poor people regardless of color, so I hope the government there helps people regardless of race and based on need.

TheJollyDodger - 2010-04-26

Ah. My South Africa. I remember when apartheid looked like it was going to end.

My nana, a nice black woman who looked after our house was sitting down and crying in front of the telly. I asked her what was wrong and she said everything. She worried about her three daughters and told me that I wouldn't understand. I left SA soon after.

I went back two years ago and it was just shocking, the change. I saw my nana again and she was happy to see me. I understood finally why she was crying so long ago as by the time I got back two of her daughters had been raped and one of them was killed. Bloody Zulus...

Oh, and these people are just the same trash that always were around. You could usually tell them by the 777s plastered all around themselves.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2010-04-28

I had a lot of mixed emotions while just watching this. On the one hand, guy with no legs I can't help but feel sorry for. But the entire country has such a history of unfairness that I can't help but wonder if there will ever be racial tolerance there, it is this never ending fucked up cycle over there and it's depressing as hell.

Is there anything actually not depressing in South Africa?

Xero - 2010-04-26

"I don't really know that much about racism..."
"Why do you think you were chosen to be retrenched?"
"I think it's because we are whites."
Just brilliant.
