I want permission to act like a bonobo, all the time. I can live without the baboon antics.

Cena_mark - 2010-05-06

Well according to Venomfangx you can. I love how even in his absence from the internet he remains as an embarrassment to creationists.
5 stars for monkey business.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2010-05-06

DID YOU SEE THAT FUCKING MONKEY IN A BOAT!?! WHO IS GIVING THEM BOATS????

Cena_mark - 2010-05-06

It would really be freaky if it built it himself

wtf japan - 2010-05-06

This was very good.

svraz - 2010-05-06

Anthromorphism is probably not the best way to:
1. argue in favour of evolution
2. create a greater understanding of the human condition
3. create a greater understanding of animal behaviour
4. whatever else this video was trying to do

Two stars for some of the neat footage.

kennydra - 2010-05-06

that wasn't really anthropomorphism but okay.

StanleyPain - 2010-05-06

Yes because Darwin's point about the "indelible stamp" is totally anthropomorphism.

Robert DeNegro - 2010-05-06

I'll put it this way. If I didn't k now point of view of this video's author, I'd swear it was a creationist, just by it's way of making cheesy snip-it comparisons. Five stars for the utter hypocracy.

svraz - 2010-05-06

kennydra: Correct me if I am wrong but I thought anthromorphism meant giving human characteristics to animals, which I think the person who made this clip was doing.

Stanleypain: Darwin said: “man with all his noble qualities... still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin.” Are you being sarcastic and mocking the video or are you making a point and disagreeing with me? I can't tell. If former, I agree. If the latter, and if my definition of anthromorphism is correct, I don't think this quote in the correct context really meshes with this video maker's intention.

dancingshadow - 2010-05-06

that's what anthropomorphism is, and it is certainly to be avoided when drawing conclusions based on observed animal behavior. But because these are just clips of animals (albiet mixed with clips of humans) any anthropomorphism is applied solely by the viewer.

svraz - 2010-05-06

Dancing Shadow: Don't you think that these images edited together provide a narrative?

dancingshadow - 2010-05-06

Sure. The video is trying to force that response in the viewer - successfully in my case and yours. So it may also be successful for people who view primates as entirely distinct from humans.
Agreed it's not the best way to argue evolution, but that's what the science at the end is for.

Robin Kestrel - 2010-05-06

Concurring 100% with svraz here. Plus it was heavy-handed and overly long. (And I wanted to like it because I completely agree with it.)

pastorofmuppets - 2010-05-06

They're showing us acting like animals, not the other way around. So I guess it's reverse anthropomorphism.

Rape Van Winkle - 2010-05-07

Let's argue about it on the internet, you fucking retards.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-05-07

See? If a bear walked in here and we put glasses on it and gave it a newspaper, that'd be anthropomorphism. Instead, this "Rape van Winkle" fellow started throwing his feces, which is the opposite situation.

svraz - 2010-05-08

RapeVanWinkle: The adults are having a discussion and debate in which we are presenting different points of view. You seem to find that threatening. Did your parents fight a lot? I am sorry to trigger you.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2010-05-06

Venomfang X

pastorofmuppets - 2010-05-06

It's our arrogance that's lowly, not our lineage. Being an animal is cool as shit.

oddeye - 2010-05-06

I agree. I love being a human. Any other creature that fucks with me is getting a 4 bore to the face.

Uulanbaatorbaby - 2010-05-06

An orangutan have more dignity than Demonfang X could ever hope for.

PS: Thanks for our abnormally high sex drive, evolutionary process!

Lurchi - 2010-05-06

I hate all primates.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2010-05-06

We have a Kilrathi in our midst.

Cena_mark - 2010-05-06

I loved Wing Commander.

longwinded - 2010-05-06

i think the time off did ya good cena

glasseye - 2010-05-06

Ghost stars for Scrotum H. Blair.

erratic - 2010-05-06

If you believe that god told you to rape and murder, wouldn't that give you an excuse to do it? I love how Jesus himself denied that morals come from God, but instead come from ourselves. "Do unto other what you would have them do unto you, this is the sum of the law and the prophets".

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2010-05-06

I love this. 'Nuff said. Five all the way.

Man Who Fights Like Woman - 2010-05-06

I'd take a star off for showing Russian Civil War footage while playing Stalin's speech, but I can't.

That guy - 2010-05-07

If you believe that you're smarter than a fundie blogger, doesn't that give you permission to kick him in the eyebrows?

oddeye - 2010-05-07

Assuming they have more than one.

chumbucket - 2010-05-07

I approve this message

dbtng - 2010-07-12

An obvious point, yet it was subtly expressed. For instance, the footage of the baboon (I think) running down a bird was interspersed with NOVA footage of bushmen running down prey until it overheats. Bipedalism saves an enormous amount of energy and massive perspiration allows the generated heat to dissipate making us some of the Earth's best distance runners. The comparison between the baboon and the bushman both highlights one of the most critical changes between us and the apes and also shows the root similarity. The whole clip was underscored by similar complexity and contrast. Really enjoyed it.
