"Papers please" doesn't apply since he was going across an international border. The phrase references internal passports.

However, I guess there's no tag for "how the fuck do I know exactly which stores I'm going to in the mall" or "escalation due to weird questions" (other than perhaps QUESTIONS ARE NOT ALLOWED, OBEY, or simply "respect my authoritay"), so you're probably fine.

Lurchi - 2010-05-07

That's really depressing.

mashedtater - 2010-05-07

and painful. so painful to listen to

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2010-05-07

That situation escalated quickly once his bitch girlfriend got involved.

mashedtater - 2010-05-07

really sug? really? i think he did a fine job all by himself

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2010-05-07

Come on taters, you know exactly how this went down.
wife: TAKE ME SHOPPING TAKE ME SHOPPING TAKE ME TO THE MALL TAKE ME TO THE MALL IN AMERICA TAKE ME SHOPPING
husband: ALRIGHT! FUCK IT, LETS GO DRIVE TO ANOTHER COUNTRY SO YOU CAN SHOP!
Then they get to the checkpoint after like an hour of her nagging about shopping (even though she never tells him what store, or why, or for what) he flips out when he encounters yet another person who wants to do nothing but nag him.
Finally, in the middle of his conversation with the officer, she jumps out of her chair and refuses to listen when her husband tries to calm her down.
The time he spent in jail was probably the most peaceful respite he's had in ages.
FUCK.

garcet71283 - 2010-05-07

THA SHUGAH RAIN HATH SPOKEN

takewithfood - 2010-05-07

Three a day? Really? And yes, I expect them to be in the paper.

William Burns - 2010-05-07

Also, recording the police without their knowledge could mean federal wiretapping charges for this guy :(

wtf japan - 2010-05-07

Now THAT'S the bullshit part. Apart from that, I have no problem with how the officers handled what happened here. In fact, I would say they went above and beyond when they tried to explain to this idiot what they were doing.

Anaxagoras - 2010-05-07

wtf_japan: you're an idiot. Just thought I'd let you know. The authorities do need to clearly explain themselves to citizens & foreigners alike in a non-fascist state. Some things don't need to be explained/justified, but wanting to know the specific stores you're going to be shopping at is something that needs to be explained/justified.

You're welcome.

dancingshadow - 2010-05-07

Nice job buddy, for your next act you should go on a plane and act all snobby about not having a bomb.

bac - 2010-05-13

The fucking moron. How dare he be taken aback by a question he doesn't know the answer to.

chumbucket - 2010-05-07

a brave new world of having to "drop the attitude"

chumbucket - 2010-05-07

Youtube comments:
Question: Which border crossing is this? So I can boycott it.

wtf japan - 2010-05-07

Yes, because our Orwellian police state is authorized to deny a foreigner admittance based on things like a hostile attitude or noncompliance in direct violation of said alien's fundamental right to freely enter and enjoy the public services of any country they choose. Fascists.

bac - 2010-05-13

Right on wtfjapan! Just like every country has a right to arrest anybody they want to, so they can make the point that you should never question them!

phalsebob - 2010-05-07

Border agents may be the dumbest form of law enforcement. They really do need some checks.

HankFinch - 2010-05-07

Back in college, we had a group of 8 crammed in a van to go see a concert in Canada and turns out one didn't bring his fucking ID and we were told to pull over for a different reason. We got through, why? Because the guy with no ID just stayed in the van while the rest of us got interviewed.

roughnready66 - 2010-05-07

You don't really have rights at an international border crossing, regardless of how much speed or caffeine you've taken.

AmericanAir - 2010-05-07

I've dealt with border agents before. They are fucking pricks.

But, this guy is an idiot.

takewithfood - 2010-05-07

Everyone in this clip was an asshole; it's just that some of them are paid to, and some of them aren't.

bac - 2010-05-13

Yeah, it is a mistake to think you can ask questions of authority figures.

roscar - 2010-05-07

I like the part where he realized how stupid he was.

Squidmojo - 2010-05-07

We need better police.

split tail - 2010-05-07

I dealt with the Canadian end of border crossing some time ago (Windsor Tunnel). Their computer pulled up a DUI I had gotten (and deserved) 7 years prior to this incident. So they pulled us over, took us in, and informed us they would be strip searching our car. I asked 'Why. What right do you have to do that?' They said, "Your in Canada; you have no rights." About that time I looked up and saw a picture of the Queen of England, and mumbled, 'Wholly fuck!". An officer said, 'Excuse me.' I said, 'I'm sorry, I just realized I'm not in Kansas anymore.' They didn't think it was funny; and though the found nothing, decided not to let us cross. So we drove up to Port Huron and got in that way. I was visiting my dad, who's a Canadian citizen.

crojo - 2010-05-07

I've crossed this border countless times, and yeah the guards can be dicks sometimes but this guy seems totally uninterested in having a peaceful crossing experience.

Interrupting the guard, flipping out over harmless questions, and getting sarcastic are the worst ideas. For one thing, these guys are told to trust their instincts, so if they have any sort of weird feeling about you it's their job to pull you over and get to know you better. And rip apart your car if they want to.

Just be cool guys.

Rosencrantz - 2010-05-07

He got what he wanted.

Scynne - 2010-05-07

This is why I never go into America.

DJRobotron - 2010-05-07

The system works!

Freeman Gordon - 2010-05-07

Those damn tourists.

endlesschris - 2010-05-07

The guy's "c'mon I'm obv not a terrorist" arguement is beyond stupid. Still, the correct response is "Sir, your hostile temperment is what has raised my suspicion. For the safety of our country, I cannot allow you through this border without a search of your vehicle."

Arresting a guy for having a hysterical female with him seems the incorrect answer.

MaulLove - 2010-05-07

But I'm white you see! I can't be a terrorist!

I got stopped once going in BC from Washington for jokingly responding "I wish" when they asked me if I had 10k in cash. I was backpacking so they thought I was a vagrant I guess?

garcet71283 - 2010-05-07

I would arrest him for that.

The world would be better off if that was a normal, arrestable, offense.

knowless - 2010-05-07

maybe canada should build there own malls and quit leaching off of america by converting their currency into ours then giving it to us.

so many terrorists... so just at the border crossing they catch 3 a day... where are they housing these 1200 terrorists they catch a year?.. every year? how long do they?... i dont understand

if you try to defend yourself from bodily harm, thats assault!

garcet71283 - 2010-05-07

I'm assuming he is lumping dealers, mules and addicts in the "terrorists" category.

memedumpster - 2010-05-07

Damn, by the reaction you'd think the guy was an American trying to get back into America, which automatically means you're a terrorist.

Asking him which store is pretty fucking retarded.

garcet71283 - 2010-05-07

Although he could just pick any damn store he knows of in the mall and call it good.

That guy - 2010-05-07

Listen to the driver for those first 30 seconds. Fuck that guy. It's an international border, don't fuck around. I somewhat believe he's trying to get arrested. Either that or he's spoiled rich and can't believe anyone would question him. Or he's got a chip on his shoulder about the US or officers or he's coked up or something.

How hard is it to answer his questions without condescension or derision in your voice? How can they do their job if they let anyone trifle and scoff and refuse to answer, without escalating. Bad officers of all sorts can abuse their power in no end of shitheel manners, but this one happened because the officer knew this guy had something going on and asked him one more odd question, "Which store?". If you don't keep ramping up, neither do the border guards.

The clip is great Nithing, but 'stasi' and 'Amerikkka', that's bs. And damnit, I'm usually not so much of a reactionary or nationalist or cop-hugger.

Xero - 2010-05-08

So satisfying to know he got jailed.

bac - 2010-05-13

I know right. It's really good to know that people can be arrested for questioning law enforcement officials. Officials that are trying to keep us safe and, this ass-clown is slowing them down. If you fuck with cops you're going to be taught a lesson what's so hard to learn about that?

Aelric - 2010-05-08

I'm sorry, but honestly, fuck this dude. It is a bizarre question that I've never heard before, but he went from 0 to d-bag in seconds. Just say you are planning to shop around the mall, maybe get lunch. The end. These aren't the droids we're looking for. Move along.

bac - 2010-05-13

This just reminds me of why cops should have Taser's. That way they get to shock a person for asking questions and not just arrest them to make the point you should always be compliant.

Eroticus E - 2010-05-13

Should have Taser's what?

e-Sensei - 2010-05-14

Douchebag deserves a kick in the balls and a night in the pokey.
