I dealt with the Canadian end of border crossing some time ago (Windsor Tunnel). Their computer pulled up a DUI I had gotten (and deserved) 7 years prior to this incident. So they pulled us over, took us in, and informed us they would be strip searching our car. I asked 'Why. What right do you have to do that?' They said, "Your in Canada; you have no rights." About that time I looked up and saw a picture of the Queen of England, and mumbled, 'Wholly fuck!". An officer said, 'Excuse me.' I said, 'I'm sorry, I just realized I'm not in Kansas anymore.' They didn't think it was funny; and though the found nothing, decided not to let us cross. So we drove up to Port Huron and got in that way. I was visiting my dad, who's a Canadian citizen.

I've crossed this border countless times, and yeah the guards can be dicks sometimes but this guy seems totally uninterested in having a peaceful crossing experience.

Interrupting the guard, flipping out over harmless questions, and getting sarcastic are the worst ideas. For one thing, these guys are told to trust their instincts, so if they have any sort of weird feeling about you it's their job to pull you over and get to know you better. And rip apart your car if they want to.

The guy's "c'mon I'm obv not a terrorist" arguement is beyond stupid. Still, the correct response is "Sir, your hostile temperment is what has raised my suspicion. For the safety of our country, I cannot allow you through this border without a search of your vehicle."

How hard is it to answer his questions without condescension or derision in your voice? How can they do their job if they let anyone trifle and scoff and refuse to answer, without escalating. Bad officers of all sorts can abuse their power in no end of shitheel manners, but this one happened because the officer knew this guy had something going on and asked him one more odd question, "Which store?". If you don't keep ramping up, neither do the border guards.

This just reminds me of why cops should have Taser's. That way they get to shock a person for asking questions and not just arrest them to make the point you should always be compliant.
