Oh look, someone comparing video games to art. Initiate fagparade in 3...

nemeses9 - 2010-05-15

It's one thing to compare video games to art, but equating Metroid Prime to Citizen Kane?

I mean really.

RocketBlender - 2010-05-16

C'mon guys, the story driving Metroid Prime is incredible. Like how at the end of the first one you see the birth of evil dark Samus? Very original. And then, after you defeated her, SHE CAME BACK in Metroid prime 3! It doesn't get much better.

oddeye - 2010-05-15

I've not seen Citizen Kane nor played Metroid Prime. What am I missing out on here?

nemeses9 - 2010-05-15

A boring film that drags on too long and a mediocre fps.

IrishWhiskey - 2010-05-15

A great film, and a game that still a lot of fun to play.

Whether you like them is a matter of taste, but neither could reasonably be called mediocre. If you're the kind of person who'll avoid movie based on length, or a lack of action, then don't watch Citizen Kane. If you only play twitch shooters or games that don't require patience and thinking, don't play Metroid Prime.

StanleyPain - 2010-05-15

Metroid Prime is so fucking ridiculously overrated. Here's the story:
Nintendo announced (at the time) a new Metroid that was going to be a first person shooter and the gaming world collectively shat bricks over how it was a violation of the universe to make a Metroid game in anything other than 2-D and how they would boycott Earth if the hallowed ground of Metroid was soiled.

The game finally game out and, of course, all the people who shat bricks and swore they would never set eyes on a video game again as protest all went out and bought it and it was actually pretty well made and nowhere as shitty as everyone expected so it was instantly declared the masterpiece of the ages and a GAME AS ART and all this other bullshit despite the massive problems with the game that everyone constantly glosses over, namely respawning enemies that make even the most trivial backtracking a pain in the ass, save points that are ludicrously far apart, and bullshit, cheap-as-fuck boss fights.

garcet71283 - 2010-05-15

Methinks StanleyPain wasn't very good with a Gamecube controller.

That being said, it is overrated. Its a good game, but it is in no way better than all the other excellent FPS's that came out around the same time (Halo, Jedi Knight II, Serious Sam, Max Payne, Operation Flashpoint, etc.) which also all brought something unique to the table (Halo's controls, JK's use of license, SS's enemy count, MP's atmosphere & story, Flashpoint's realism). In fact, the loneliness of Metroid Prime was kind of a turnoff to me, I like it when the main character feels like part of something bigger.

P.S. I know Max Payne isn't an FPS, but it might as well have been :P

Knuckles - 2010-05-16

garcet71283, I'm putting you on a list. You will never get off the list. One day you will regret having been put on the list.

garcet71283 - 2010-05-16

Knuckles, I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills acquired over a very long career on the internet, skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
If you take me off the list now, that will be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you. And I will troll you.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-05-16

Metroid Prime was good. I wouldn't really call it an FPS. It was similar to Metroid.

The rest: the hate, the love, etc, is children (both regular and overgrown) not being able to separate what's real from the game press, which ceased to be anything but PR and submarine articles sometime in 1992, once showered people with 20/20 vision began playing video games.

Xenocide - 2010-05-15

Also: Dr. Robotnick's Mean Bean Machine is clearly the Iliad of video games, in the same way that Donkey Kong Barrel Blast is the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band of video games, and Batman Forever is the Tetris of film.

Goddammit dude I know you like shooting at the aliens in Metroid but that does not make it fucking Citizen Kane. Jesus.

Riskbreaker - 2010-05-15

Video games are such a completely different form of expression from film. The day the vg press, fans and creators realize that is the day video games will truly evolve from all this nonesense.

oddeye - 2010-05-15

They should just give out cheap laptops with Planescape:Torment built in for free. For the good of humanity.

Xenocide - 2010-05-15

It's just kind of an inferiority complex that games seem to have, I think. Especially lately, they seem to have decided that the way to "legitimacy" is to be as much like movies as possible. So now the norm is long, pointless cutscenes interrupting the parts that make a game, well, a game.

The key is to realize that the unique experience offered by video games has validity in itself, and doesn't need to justify itself to anyone.

Riskbreaker - 2010-05-15

"The key is to realize that the unique experience offered by video games has validity in itself, and doesn't need to justify itself to anyone."

Exactly, or by means of other genres. You don't go around saying that a movie is as good as a book, a boos as good as an opera, and so on.

Xenocide - 2010-05-16

Last night I had some chicken wings which were exactly as good as F. Scott Fitzgerald's early short stories.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-05-16

It's a mistake to talk about games as if they have feelings, let alone feelings of inferiority. This is just someone at IGN trying to justify his existence. I'm sure the studio that did Prime was more concerned with evoking Super Metroid than Orson Welles. And really, since when have critics been worth anything?

Riskbreaker - 2010-05-16

The vg media is, in it's 98% of all forms, paper or web, completely worthless. It does seem that many studios and vg creators are having either identity issues these days or are just trying to please way too many people. Thus, we have games that feel like glorified long boring movies, games that want to be several genres at the same time, or plataformers with tutorials so you can learn how to jump over your first plataform.

Aelric - 2010-05-15

WRONG!

cognitivedissonance - 2010-05-15

F.A.T.A.L. is gaming's Volpone.

kingofthenothing - 2010-05-15

Super Mario Bros. is Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle.
Dragon Warrior 3 is The Never-Ending Story.
Dante's Inferno the game is Dante's Inferno the animated movie.

Nikon - 2010-05-15

Final Fantasy XIII is the Neverending Story III and IV.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-05-16

Doom is the The Jazz Singer of games.

FABIO - 2010-05-15

Citizen Kane was a bunch of boring, empty (but pretty!) rooms?

Adham Nu'man - 2010-05-15

Citizen Kane, from a cinematographic perspective, contained numerous revolutionary and gorgeous shots, but was otherwise fairly mediocre as far as the acting and the story it told.

Touch of Evil, now well, THAT's a fucking amazing film.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2010-05-15

Calling the acting of Citizen Kane mediocre then praising Touch of Evil, with Welles' cartoonish slurring and lopsided face and Charleton Heston in brownface, seems disingenuous at best even though they both own.

memedumpster - 2010-05-15

What incredible bullshit.

I guess that means that Halo is the Avatar of video ga... whoa.

BorrowedSolution - 2010-05-15

This somewhat remind me of Tyra's 'How to understand your gamer guy.' in it's complete lack of connection to reality.

K. Brass - 2010-05-15

Wuthering Heights is the Final Fantasy VII of literature.

Adham Nu'man - 2010-05-15

What the hell are you talking about Mr? Portal (with it's innovative take on physics and camera perspective, and innovative use of a narrator/antagonist) is quite obviously the Citizen Kane of videogames.

Everybody knows that Metroid Prime is the Braveheart of gaming.

RomancingTrain - 2010-05-15

Citizen Kane is Metal Gear Solid 2 of movies.

Riskbreaker - 2010-05-16

Metal Gear Solid 2 is the taco bell of food.

Wander - 2010-05-16

Taco Bell is the Dead Alive of operas.

Accidie - 2010-05-16

Half-Life is the new Wednesday.

Hooker - 2010-05-16

Not having played Metroid Prime, I would call it the Titanic of games. Massive fan buy-in and raving at the beginning, slow but steady disillusionment with what was once a cherished love, and then a disappearance from the culture of the medium altogether.

Riskbreaker - 2010-05-16

Considering how fast console generations move it seems that these days, both fans and media, are way too eager to start naming some games "the best game ever" almost right after the release. Everything is either the best thing ever or the worst game mankind has ever seen, nothing in-between.

boner - 2010-05-16

All this games-as-art bullshit is about videogame journalist hacks trying to justify their worthless existences, making top-ten lists and using the word "linear".

The God of Biscuits - 2010-05-16

Actually, I believe he meant X-com

themilkshark - 2010-05-16

I love Metroid Prime, but honestly Super Mario Bros. is the citizen Kane of video games

poorwill - 2010-05-16

Only good post in this comments section.

poorwill - 2010-05-16

Although you could make a good argument for Tetris too.

La Loco - 2010-05-16

This video clip is the Citizen Kane of bad game reviews.

Harveyjames - 2010-05-24

...and we're done. Fagparade, stand down!

Sanest Man Alive - 2010-10-15

Well shit, now I just want to play Citizen Kane: The Video Game.

thebaronsdoctor - 2011-01-16

I like how eager people are to try and legitimize video games as art when the entire medium isn't even half a century old. It's akin to people trying to find the War and Peace of film before the introduction of sound.

Seriously people, video games aren't even forty years old yet. Citizen Kane didn't even come out until roughly sixty years after the development of the motion picture.

These nerds are far too eager to legitimize their hobby
