The producers knew Dallas was done, and they decided that the show should end with a soused J.R. suiciding after being egged on by a demon. That's a "fuck you" to the audience so colossal, it's kind of awesome.
The description reminded me of the Fumetti plot summaries on The Groovy Age of Horror blog (NSFW).
The writing is of a '1950's PSA about the dangers of alcohol' standard
Also it might have cleverer if he'd revealed he was a demon AFTER he'd let him kill himself, just saying (but then that wouldn't have allowed them the cliffhanger resolution where we see that JR only shot the mirror)
I was thinking more along the lines of a Chick tract. Afterward JR's soul would come back and warn Bobby about not accepting Jesus.
"...and to the children, CONGRATULATIONS!"
I bet some angry Texans shot their TV after this.
And now we see how Lost will end.
If Joel Gray was Satan, I might be cooler with the whole religion thing.
I don't think this was so much of a "fuck you" to the audience as a deep, loving suck/stroke to the Bible Belt viewers where JR paid for his wicked ways.
Oliver Stone should have ended his movie about W like this.
