I do not have the technical basis needed to evaluate their statements, however, assuming they're credible I'd like to second Ursa Minor's commentary on the situation and offer my own sobbing whimper of despair.

This was my 8th draft of the small essay I had previously written about this particular video. I feel I've pared it down to the core, the essence.

I've read Simmon's book and his presentations with interest over the past 7 years, and I met him at one of the APSO conferences.

The consensus on oil discussion boards is that this banker has finally gone out of his depth in a way that's discrediting all of his prior thoughtful work. He also looks particularly disheveled and unhealthy, and some of us are worried.

As far as I can tell, he's conflating reports of large mid-water column plumes, which are very diffuse emulsions of oil droplets in water potentially created by dispersants at the wellhead, about 0.0003% oil, with a mass of solid oil.

I'm skeptical of this claim. If there was even a modicum of evidence for it, it would be all over the news but I haven't heard of it. It could be possible but until I see some actual support besides testimony I won't buy it.

The only way another leak 6 miles away could have happened would be if the blowout preventer failure caused enough back pressure to rupture another leak somewhere - and I don't think that's possible.

Their conclusion is that it has to look like another leak is going on - but have nothing to really support it.

I do, however, think that the original leak is enough to cause the oil spill and the underwater plumes.

You all know Matt Simmons is a crank, right?

Due to the seriousness of the issue, I can't discount this without admitting that I might be doing so because it's just too horrible to be true. Deep down inside, I know BP is evil enough to try and cover this up if it were real and the administration is too incompetent to ensure we actually find out about it if that is the case. So only time can tell just how fucked we all are.
