There are words to the hawaii five-o theme song? I'm as shocked as i was the day i learned there were words to the Bonanza theme.

BEARD TIME: Lots of TV shows actually had secret lyrics to their theme songs. Please rise for the lyrics to the original Star Trek theme:

Beyond the rim of the starlight,
my love is wandring in star flight.
I know he'llfind
In star clustered reaches
Love, strange love
A starwoman teaches.

I konw his journey ends never.
His Star Trek will go on forever.
But tell him while
He wanders his starry sea,
Remember,
Remember me.

These unfortunate lyrics exist because Gene Roddenberry was a douchebag. He took the original theme tune (composed by someone else, who was not informed) added lyrics, and was thus legally entitled to half the royalties off the song, even though the lyrics never aired.

That then became a typical practice for TV show producers for a few years, until someone challenged it in court and got the loophole closed.

I'm not sure if that's the origin of these lyrics, but it doesn't matter, because all morally questionable acts are justified if they result in Sammy Davis JR.

Now I want to hear... no... no I don't.

Ironically, this practice still exists in the music industry. If someone writes different words to your song, and records them, they instantly get half the royalties if the tune is released. This results in a shitload of "songwriters" such as Avril Lavigne, various rappers, etc. who write one or two lines and get entitled to royalties.

At least bonanza's lyrics were fun to listen to. I have heard the star trek one at some point and it's just painful.

God, can this man make anything that isn't fucking awesome?

memedumpster - 2010-05-29

This is a great song!

Michael Houser - 2010-05-29

Thomas Pynchon's lyrics were way different. He lied to me!!!

splatterbabble - 2010-05-29

Didn't the Ventures originally do this?
