Power of music indeed.
I love hearing firsthand accounts such as these, especially if they have happy endings.
Reminds me of an interview with a British WW2 veteran I saw on tv a few years back.
He was wounded in a battle somewhere in Africa (close to El Alamien I think) and they took him back to an aid station and patched him up. Afterwards, they set him down next to a wounded German prisoner that had been banged up pretty bad. After about an hour or so, the German looked over at this guy, reached out, and grabbed his hand.
The Englishman was taken aback, but just went with it. He fell asleep soon after. The next morning, he woke up, and the german was gone. He asked somebody about it, and they told him that the german had died during the night, and still had thier hands clasped together.
It touched me, to say the least.

Military Mancakes Touching.
Sorry.
But it was hilarious.

Hopefully the army learns from this and stops annoying enemy soldiers with Metallica and Axel Rose. Throw some smooth jazz or a Johnny Cash song and they might just surrender.

If we start treating the enemy as human, who knows what other unpatriotic things could happen.

As I ran my errands today, every person I met caused me to think, "This person is as scared and lonely as I am."
I didn't have a trumpet, so I smiled.
I hope tonight somebody is less scared, somebody is less lonely.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2010-09-02
Incredible but I shudder at the thought of something like this playing out in Iraq or Afghanistan. The ensuing right wing media shit storm would be epic.
|
|
Cena_mark - 2010-09-03 The right wing media wouldn't be angry. They eat up stories like these. This is a great American and the right loves great Americans.
|
|
glasseye - 2010-09-03 And of war triumphing over thought.
|
Cena_mark - 2010-09-03 The right loves all WW2 stories. It was our finest hour. It was back when we could actually fight a war without Lieberals complaining about us our soldiers killing the enemy.
|
godot - 2010-09-03 Clearly what the right craves is a liberal sending corn-fed rural kids into a meat grinder. Us libs can probably arrange that....
|
Cat_Mech - 2010-09-03 I too believe that entering a global conflict that had seen the majority of other combatants use up a vast majority of resources fighting it out for several years prior, and then still letting Russia save the world from Nazi Germany, is America's finest hour.
Also, dropping atomic weapons on civilians. Don't forget to be proud of that.

These stories tug at my heart strings.
It ranks up there with the TV special I saw when survivors of a German and Canadian unit who fought each other in a fierce battle met up 55 some-odd years later. One of the Germans was in tears sobbing because he was responsible for blowing up a building which killed 4 or 5 of the Canadians and he was afraid the Canadian survivors he was about to meet would still be mad at him.

wtf japan - 2010-09-06
I'm sorry. I've heard way too many stories from veterans about playing footsie with the Nazis. The Japs and even our own African American units were a bunch of animals, but the Nazis--well, they were just swell.
In fact, the only veteran I've spoken to who fought in the European theater and who hasn't gone on about how much they liked the Nazis was my great uncle. I think liberating Dachau ruined things for him.
