While many muslims live in conservative theocratic cultures that embrace islamic fundamentalism, there are also several culturally liberal nations with a majority muslim population that don't (Most of north africa, Pakistan, Malaysia and Bangladesh spring to mind). The dominant political culture defines how rigidly the religion is followed, just like how Christianity lead to burning people to death because you can't suffer a witch to live, but now there are tons of Christians who don't burn witches anymore. The culture mellowed the fuck out, and the worship changed to fit the culture.

I would also like to defend Glenn Beck and Cena Mark from attacks by Muslim extremists. Not because I'm a big fan of either of you, it's just the right thing to do.
Take one look at the Kurds and the Shiites and the Sunni, and how they treat each other, and it's pretty obvious that to Muslims, not all Muslims are the same. That alone seems to contradict the monolithic view of Islam the cartoon is pushing, but nothing will bring them together faster than the perception that they are under attack from the west. Listen, motherfucker, there's a war going on, and if we make it a war against all 1.5 billion muslims, we will lose.
Even the cartoon acknowledges that Muslims in the West are not the same as Muslims in the Muslim world, so why are we making Muslims in the West the object of suspicion and fear because of the Muslim equivalent of a YMCA? They want to build their Community Center in lower Manhattan, because that where their community is. THEY LIVE THERE. The idea that they're trying to create a shine in celebration of a terrorist attack on their own home seems pretty ridiculous. You are punishing the victims of 9/11 and rewarding the terrorists, who want nothing more than evidence that Islam is under attack in the west.
Because this is largely a propaganda war. Bin laden understands this, even if Glenn beck and Cena Mark do not.

This is where the right and the Cena_marks expose their idiocy. Every Muslim they are against is an Arab, because all Arabs are Muslims, and all Muslims are Arabs, to them.
Most Muslim aren't Arabic. Only a small percentage are.
But to the right, and the Cena_marks of the world, it is impossible for them to grasp this. They can only conceptualize Islam with a hooked nose and a desert oasis.
