In an attempt to find vibrance in the midst of wreckage, Johhny Knoxville just finds wreckage.

I gifted my Civ equivalent of Detroit to Montezuma once.

I like how everyone tells him "I hate when people who do features on Detroit just walk around abandoned buildings" and he's like "Yeah, that's terrible. So anyway, where's the nearest abandoned building?"

Cena_mark - 2010-09-12
Detroit is getting invaded by hipsters... that place keeps going further and further down the toilet.

I found this to be extremely refreshing. I think it shows that there are new possibilities for creativity and cooperation when a city is abandoned by its industrial-capitalist overlords.

"I'm 24 and I have a 9-foot building at my disposal." And he's clearly hipster-ish. Oh boy.

Jeriko-1 - 2010-09-12 OH NO, WE'D RATHER STAY IN LIMBO THAN HAVE PEOPLE BRING MONEY INTO THE COMMUNITY BECAUSE THEY SLIGHTLY ANNOY US.

Rape Van Winkle - 2010-09-13 So if they slightly annoy you, they have to bring you money?

I'm ok with this. More amused that Johnny spends the whole time being like "Yeah these abandoned buildings sure are fun -- can we leave this dangerous decaying remnant of a forgotten age before it collapses all around us?"

I'm skeptical. I don't think there's really any way grassroots businesses, small llcs, and sole proprietor-ships can effectively rebuild a city like Detroit without every Starbuck's Target, Wal-Mart, and real estate gentrification project within 300 miles catching a whiff of that sweet, sweet Detroit pussy if they pull this off and wrecking it for everyone.
|
Aelric - 2010-09-13 That is a good point. But that is probably an unavoidable fact no matter what. Detroit is too big and may one day have too many people in it again to dodge it. Still, that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be used for those small ventures while it can be. I mean, like I said above, something has to eventually be done with Detroit. I don't think we'll just let it completely slide into John Carpenter mode, wall it up and send prisoners there.
It's really an American tragedy, but Christ, do something with that city. Anything!
|
grep - 2010-09-13 You'd be shocked how much of the Detroit area is all Mom and Pop crap. Walmarts are in the suburbs.

So, just spitballing here, is it bad enough that they'll actually SELL empty houses, unlike the rest of America where they don't sell the empty houses in the pathetic hope that an economic miracle might still happen?
Because my credit rating is suddenly interested.

What if the hipsters save Detroit? Will people finally learn to love the hipsters?
At least until they get bored and abandon Detroit when it gets too mainstream again. And they wander the country making shitty cities cool enough to hate.

"If I'm here, and I give a damn, and I'm part of the community, I can make a difference in Detroit."
This alone proves that (most) of these people are not hipsters, as they actually care about something beyond the "scene" and their trust funds.
