Trust me, it was a lot more effective on seventies TV. Back in the days of no internet, when cable meant 10 channels instead of 3, possibly 4, you read about Bowie, you saw his picture, And you were hungry for his freaky presense . And so he popped up for just a second on TV, and then he popped off. By the time you knew what you were looking at, it was over, and in your imagined memory it was so much sexier than the skinny reality with bad teeth.

I was sixteen, and I can tell you where I was, and (sort of) what I was doing the one time I saw this ad in the summer of 1974. If I had been able to see it more often, it would have been much less effective. I'll tell you this much: I BOUGHT that motherfucking album!
