The more I think about it, THIS is what changes attitudes. Its stuff like this that humanizes the gay experience to a het audience. Even though that isn't the intended audience. seeing a gay family go snowboarding with their son is so mundane that it changes everything.
Xiphias had a great post a while back on POE-NEWS about why gay pride parades and all that were important, and I agree with him. For the public at large, though, this is more transformative then a thousand sequined dresses.

Back in the 80s and 90s, that kind of harassment was going on in the school I went to, and the targets weren't even actually gay. One guy I worked with who was a few years older got thrown THROUGH the divider between bathroom stalls for being a "faggot" because he listened to death metal. In 6th grade health class, the teacher told us "when I first learned about AIDS I thought it was just God's way of punishing IV drug users and homosexuals, but now I know it can happen to anyone." He was the "young, hip" teacher and ended up principal three years later. This was in a fairly liberal school in a small, upper-middle class town in Massachusetts.
So yeah, we've come a long way even in my lifetime. This stuff still happens, but at least it's not considered normal by as many people now.

jangbones - 2010-09-23 A friend of mine lived in NYC in the early eighties. He had some hair-raising stories on the misperceptions about AIDS among the gay community. Nobody knew anything, but there were rumors about a "gay cancer" epidemic that had everyone panicking, gays and straights alike.

Aelric - 2010-09-23 Schools will always be filled with this shit, at least to some extent, no matter what , unfortunately. When you get a thousand or so teenagers filly of wobbly self-image and sudden awareness of sexuality, combined with the hormonal bath we all went through at that age, it's inevitable. Teachers attitudes changing as the older generations blessedly die the fuck out helps a lot, but where there are children, there will be cruelty.
The saddest thing is, in small towns like the one I went to high school in, people don't typically grow out of that mentality. I myself was fired from a shitty pizza place for making the other dudes working there 'uncomfortable' by not joining in in the typical "I AIN'T NO HOMO" talk that was the typical everyday subject of conversation. And let me tell you, the homoerotic energy in that place was crackling.
