They were teenagers when they did this, and I think just about every video game-playing teenage boy of that time would have wanted to make a game like this. These kids actually made it happen! You have to give them credit for that, at least.
The programmer went on to write a bunch of console/arcade emulators that were pretty awesome for their time, then got hired by a real game company. The artist, at least as far as a few years ago was... Still doing this shit.

I have to actually tip my hat to them for having the dedication and skill to make an actual working piece of software, even if it is ugly and derivative. I sure wasn't making anything that functional when I was a teenager.
One of the dudes went on to write the emulators Nesticle and Genecyst, too! Nesticle was great because it let you edit the graphics from within the emulator. I remember giving everybody in river city ransom big floppy dongs when i was 11.
