When I first read the title, I thought the dad and kid went to space in a homemade craft. Made me realize that I didn't read the newspaper near enough.
Well space has many definitions. To some, it's the point in the atmosphere where we'd pretty much die in a couple of seconds if exposed (~60,000 feet), to others, it's orbit (about 500 miles or more above Earth). Technically, this is near-space, as you cannot reach space with a balloon.
This is pretty cool, but I guess I'm jaded in that I'm amazed they were able to do something like this without being thrown in Gitmo the way things are nowadays.
At some points, it almost looks like the curvature of the horizon reverses itself. I wonder if that's an effect of the type of lens used. Very cool, though.
