Some small part of me thinks this is a fake, but then I remember where I am and tell that voice to shut the hell up.

Can someone with some actual physics/optical bla bla knowledge chime in here on whether this may be fake or not. I'm holding my stars until then.

I do know that some retard kid tried to do a home Pink Floyd laser light show with one of these things and did bounce a beam off of a mirror through his retina.

I never want to be anywhere near one of these devices when they are in use.

I'm too lazy to look into it further, but I'm pretty sure a 1watt laser is powerful enough to light a match or pop a baloon.

It is, but how narrow and collimated the beam is can make a huge difference. Lasers marketed to discos are frequently well above the typical 80 mW max for class Class 2M tight beams. Broad beams as the one here are less problematic, as when one broadens beam diameter by 10x, the light density potentially entering any pupil is reduced 100 fold. The laser in this video appears to have beam-broadening optics, so the idiot may recover.

I'm DJing a nephew's wedding this month, and one of my purchases was a cheap Chinese 50 mW +100 mW green/red laser, probably class 3B. Its more or less invisible without haze/fog (which isn't possible given the outdoor venue), and I gave myself a scare when testing it as the main beam (residual after grating diffraction) entered my peripheral vision, and temporarily blinded a spot in my far left vision. I won't be using this, but oh hell, is a cheap lesson.

Readers of SolarTungsten's P_N blog posts will know that even pros in a lab setting with fixed equipment face blinding hazards from lasers.

I'm surprised that unintentional blinding of oneself and others doesn't ALWAYS happen within moments of some idiot unpacking an overpowered hand laser.

SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE!

(I always wanted to say that.)

The future's so bright I've got to wear shades.

Wah wah wah I burned my eye wah wah.

Baby Finster - 2010-10-09

We had this discussion on PN already, and concluded that it is an absolutely great idea to sell 1W lasers unrestricted to the general public.

Doomstein - 2010-10-09

It's even a better idea to give it the shape of a lightsaber hilt and market it as such.

Udderdude - 2010-10-09

Do not look at laser with remaining eye.
