Awesome, but I need some fractal monsters to shoot in the face with my fractal gun.

Zoot42 - 2010-10-14

I wish I lived on a giant fractal full of fractal full of fractals...
Oh wait.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2010-10-15

It would either make a great children's book or horror novel. Take your pick.

phalsebob - 2010-10-14

3.5D!

Toenails - 2010-10-14

The only problem I have with this is that 3D representations of fractal sets is that they are static. As in, there is a point where you cannot magnify the image any more and get wonderful new worlds of mind fuckery.

Still, on 720p, it's still pretty fucking amazing knowing that every little cube-like protrusion holds another mind-blowing world within itself.

Maybe someday we will be able to find that coveted BLIT and destroy the world with its beauty.

What are you saying that based on? These hybrid fractals are based on folding 3D space iteratively, rather than based on 3D projections of 4D fractal space or whatever, and so far they do seem to have detail that continues down to the infinitesimal.

Knuckles - 2010-10-15

An old lady once told me this. We were looking at a fractal and she said, "that fractal is actually made of smaller fractals."

I smiled and said, "oh yeah? Well then what are those fractals made of?"

But she just smiled back and said, "you've very clever, young man, very clever -- but it's fractals all the way down!"

Toenails - 2010-10-15

Oh, I meant the software program that renders these. And I based it on what I thought was their limitations on dynamically rendering the forms that pop up when you zoom in.

If there are programs that can zoom up on these sets ad infinitum, then I take my lamentation back.

My stars go to you, Knuckles

The actual numbers that a CPU or GPU can represent in hardware have a fixed precision, and at a certain point they stop being precise enough to calculate the next view of the fractal.

You can represent numbers of arbitrary precision in software, though. I know that some of the 2D fractal programs will switch to arbitrary precision when the machine's numbers stop being precise enough. I don't know how these 3D ones work, though, and I'm just bsing here but I think it might just be too slow to be practical.

Switching to arbitrary-precision math is much slower...before you got basic arithmetic essentially for free, but now you have to do it in software, and the number of significant digits starts to matter.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-10-16

nvm, i thought you were asking why but you did nothing of the sort

and stars

I don't want to alarm anyone but I think I'm freaking out.

Welcome to the Church of Science! Here's a jet pack, a lab coat, and a Daft Punk helmet!

Insert Stencil Buffers joke here.

Innocent Bystander - 2010-10-15

Note to self: watch this next time you're blunted.

Math is creepy

Ursa_minor - 2010-10-15

Farcry 3

MrBuddy - 2010-10-15

Looks like Mandelbulb 3D to me.

Lurchi - 2010-10-15

Wow there really is some crazy shit on a dollar bill.

memedumpster - 2010-10-15

This doesn't give that fractaliness that other videos like this give. This is awesome, but awesome in that "here looks like a good place to lay pine mines" way, not in that "I'm falling into infinity" way.

kingofthenothing - 2010-10-15

So that's what the Infinite Hotel looks like.

Squeamish - 2010-10-18

I think it's trying to communicate with us on some strange, primordial level.
