I'm glad there are people documenting the lives of all the remaining Holocaust survivors. Maybe it'll keep people from forgetting and repeating it for awhile longer then just writing it down.

Enjoy - 2010-10-15

It has been repeated. Look at the Khmer Rouge and the killing fields of Cambodia. Those were brown asians, and not gay or Jewish people, so I suppose it's not a hate crime for some. Genocide continues yet we are only fixated on the this particular (and horriblest) holocaust.

I think its more that western society...which always considers itself "civilized"...is fixated on this one because it was carried out by a people that many can trace their lineage to (I myself am only separated by 1 generation). It isn't so much racism or ignorance as it is the stark contradiction that it casts on western civilization.

Zoot42 - 2010-10-15

I can't believe i posted something so incredibly ignorant. I feel like an ass.

Lauritz Melchior - 2010-10-16

This thread is very important.

Also, I love this guy's inflections and cadences. He's adorable.

joffe b - 2010-10-16

don't feel too embarrassed Zoot, I mean you should definitely be more aware of the horrors we continue to inflict on each other, but Enjoy only cares about drawing attention to these horrors when it will distract from horrors done to gay people. Otherwise he couldn't care less.

Fuck Google ads. They pop up right where the subtitles appear & are annoying as hell.

BTW.. awesome clip. Thanks for submitting it.

this man is incredibly courageous for speaking about his experience.

Who were the asocials?

cognitivedissonance - 2010-10-15

"Asocials" were folks that the modern conservative would call "welfare queens". People who didn't or couldn't work as much as the Nazis felt they should have.

sliggy - 2010-10-15

Aside from the obvious cultural significance of this, and the horror that this guy had to live through this, two things stood out to me as particularly interesting:

I never knew that Jehovah's Witnesses were specifically targeted. I didn't even know they were around in Germany back then.

It made me smile a bit when his first thought as a free man was "I can organize my life however I want!" It seemed a very German thing to say.

Five.

Nithing - 2010-10-15

Something to remember next to you hear Glenn Beck call the Nazis a 'gay rights movement'.

Mister Yuck - 2010-10-15

I'm glad his story had a happy ending.

Syd Midnight - 2010-10-16

LARPing as an SS officer certainly isn't a despicable unconscionable thing to do
