Baldr - 2010-10-23

I teach one of the undergraduate classes that makes these people give up. It's hard sometimes. This semester, I have a suicidal premed who wants to be a plastic surgeon, and keeps requesting extra office hours where he continually asks what's going to be on the test in every octave of whine. Because of his psychological disorder, the school has granted his request for extra time on every exam, and he can no longer be counted off for spelling.

He never comes to class, and he seems somewhat surprised that he's not doing well. Actual quote, "You're not going to be mean on this test are you?" Fuck yes I'm going to be mean. If I go to the fucking ER one day and you're the attending physician I'd rather drag my bloody body down to the next hospital than let your dickless ass inside of me.

wtf japan - 2010-10-23

If you want to get inside of Baldr, your ass had better DAMN well have a dick.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2010-10-23

Wow, that was an engrossing and highly-informative anecdote. You sound like an excellent teacher dedicated to helping your students succeed!

Billie_Joe_Buttfuck - 2010-10-23

wow that was a dumb denigration of boring unimportant shit

minimalist - 2010-10-23

assholes angstin' over their poor biology grades in heah

TeenerTot - 2010-10-23

Sounds like DESSERT is from that generation where "everyone gets a trophy."

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2010-10-23

I'm sure Baldr's student will switch to psychology any day now.

Anaxagoras - 2010-10-23

Or maybe DESSERT thinks that a teacher shouldn't take such obvious satisfaction in failing a student. Sometimes it has to be done, but it should never be a satisfying thing. If it is, the teacher is in the wrong profession.

Baldr - 2010-10-23

That's a lot of opinions on my drunken venting.

Jet Bin Fever - 2010-10-23

I don't care how uninspired or annoying your students are, for you to treat them like that you should really choose a new profession. Shame on you.

Xenocide - 2010-10-23

Yes, students who don't come to class and ask for free rides are exactly the kind of people I want to have entrusted with human lives. So stop being mean on tests, Baldr. In fact, I think at this point the only way to prove you're not a monster who hates education is to go into class on Monday and give everyone a free PHD.

fatatty - 2010-10-23

Baldr, please continue to be a wall between idiots who don't have their hands inside of people and idiots who have their hands inside of people.

memedumpster - 2010-10-23

You should set up a fake crisis situation and scare the everliving shit out of him.

chairsforcheap - 2010-10-23

professors are humans too and have opinions?!?!?!?! FUCK THIS PLANET.

RocketBlender - 2010-10-23

Seriously, screw half the people in this thread. If I were a teacher and had a kid who wanted to be any kind of surgeon not showing up for class or doing half the work for the class that I did the work to put together, I wouldn't like them either, let alone want them doing things with knives and shit on other human beings.

I'm all for being a little mean and weeding people out before handing them a licence and a scalpel.

Yhanthlei - 2010-10-24

I do agree with having high standards for who we allow to put sharp objects in other people with the intent of not killing them, but the combination of "suicidal premed" and "Fuck yes I'm going to be mean" is slightly disturbing. I don't think that anyone is suggesting giving him a sympathy pass, but maybe trying to avoid having him down a pill bottle would be good, as much as you can.

Baldr - 2010-10-24

Obviously I didn't actually say this to my student. I haven't been anything other than polite in our interactions. Yes this is my internal dialogue every time I talk to him, but I make sure I never show it. I honestly have no idea if he's actually suicidal, or if he just discovered that the threat of it is remarkably effective for circumventing institutional rules. Either way, I have to do my job, and that means no special treatment for any student.

Also, I don't hate this person, and he's not failing. I'm just frustrated by his inability to take responsibility for his own life.

Slumgullion - 2010-10-24

It should not be a crime to fail an idiot or two once in a while. Sounds like Baldr hit a little too close to home for a few people.

Toenails - 2010-10-24

Man, these comments *are* pretty gold!

Thanks Scrotum!

BorrowedSolution - 2010-10-24

Remember when school used to be a meritocracy? DESSERT doesn't.

Vicious - 2011-04-22

Teener, everybody on this site who was born after 1945 is from that generation.

yogarfield - 2013-11-10

organic chemistry?

Jack Dalton - 2010-10-23

I didn't see anything inappropriate or offensive about Baldr's comment. I guess self-entitled grade grubbers should get minted into successful careers without anyone questioning their lack of worth ethic or merit. The fact is that professors generally help students who do the coursework and come to class--and most certainly don't take pleasure failing students who are motivated but lack the aptitude to succeed.

Enjoy - 2010-10-23

Well we all can't be Nurse Ratched.

minimalist - 2010-10-23

And just how DOES he treat them? Allowing one of them to monopolize his time in order to whine uselessly, then refusing to bend on his academic standards for the sake of a student who refuses to go to class or study? Ooh, what a meanie.

I see no indication that he ever treated the student poorly. He's privately venting his frustrations, as any sane, self-respecting human being would.

minimalist - 2010-10-23

Shit, should have been a reply to Jet Bin Fever.

Jack Dalton - 2010-10-23

Yeah... I did the same thing too.

Also, I like how this otherwise insignificant video has become a discussion on whether Baldr is a worthy teacher or just some big ol' meanie.

YOU CRUEL, CRUEL MAN BALDR. How dare you do your job? Well sir, remind me never to take a class with you if I ever want to be an astronaut.

Baldr - 2010-10-24

It's not even about me really. Some dick professor caused difficulty for them at one point, and I'm just the proxy for the resulting anger. I don't mind though. College is a pretty brutal experience. I remember spending 95% of my time as an undergraduate feeling like a complete disappointment to myself and my family. I even cried once before an exam. If screaming at me on the internet helps them cope, I'm all for it.

Syd Midnight - 2010-10-23

A Tysonesque career climax

Toenails - 2010-10-24

I wish I could award extra stars for the poster's ability to find such a incendiary subject not about Tim and Eric.

But then I'd take them away because I'm really not looking forward to more videos by this bed-dwelling drain on society.

YAAAAAAAAAAY!!!
