The news report is from a foreign media source. It's just surprise day today isn't it?

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2010-10-23

America is a shining city upon a hill whose beacon light guides freedom-loving people everywhere.

mouser - 2010-10-23

The war itself was illegal.

Cena_mark - 2010-10-23

Don't give me that tired old line. Saddam was ducking the U.N. and we officially waged war on Iraq. Now you can decide for yourself whether the war was right or wrong, but it wasn't illegal.

fedex - 2010-10-23

oh cena mark, you old troll you

augias - 2010-10-23

Didn't your hero Ron Paul complain how the U.S. didn't officially wage war. If you're gonna pretend to be whatever you're pretending to be, be coherent about it.

Cena_mark - 2010-10-24

I don't like Ron Paul. And I am what I am. I didn't support going to war, but I hate things like this that come out and undermine our efforts to stabilize Iraq.
But Congress did vote to wage war, and Ron Paul was just butthurt that his side lost.

simon666 - 2010-10-24

I'm not sure I follow Cena's line about Saddam, but the question of "legality" is not a strong argument. Legality requires an authority under which agents submit or are forcefully submitted by. International "law" is enforced and respected when it happens to suit the majority.

Further, "legality" doesn't speak to the morality or ethical implications of a particular act necessarily. I think it's more persuasive to an act like this war was the wrong act on emotional and moral grounds.

The war wasn't "legal"? So fucking what. Whether the act conforms to a particular groups particular set of standards is not what insists an act is done rightly or wrongly.

Fart.

simon666 - 2010-10-24

I'm not fixing the grammar, you'll figure it out.

baleen - 2010-10-24

"I didn't support going to war"

Um, yes you did. It's nice of you to be for it and against it all of a sudden though, nice try.

I'd to see Russia Today do a nice piece of the atrocities in Chechnya. Doubt that will ever happen.

augias - 2010-10-24

You poor, stupid, man, Cena. If you know how to read anything besides internet comments, here is the proof congress didn't declare war.

Cena_mark - 2010-10-24

Baleen, did you know me in 2003? I didn't support going to war back then. But now that we are in war we must do our best to finish it.
Aquiass, Congress still voted to use force.

fedex - 2010-10-25

"But now that we are in war we must do our best to finish it. "

ah, that old chestnut...what a splendid loop of insanity to rationalize endless war.
The only way the US ever finishes wars these days is to GTFO after mass attrition, and then try to figure out how to call that "winning". Been like that for sixty years, really...

crfog - 2010-10-23

If ever there was a video deserving of the "why the terrorists hate us" tag, it is this one.

memedumpster - 2010-10-23

Terrorists hell, needs a "why the earth hates us" tag.

simon666 - 2010-10-23

I think what the leaks suggest, rather than just a reason to critique the US, is that it is impossible to have a war without atrocities to humanity and that is a reason to more vehemently oppose modern war, as the discourse defining war has largely revolved around the "cleanliness" of it. The leaks say, if the US who no doubt has the greatest number of war technologies aimed at limiting collateral non-military deaths, which suggests a concern for humanity, is incapable of heinous acts, then perhaps it is time to assess what we think war is in the contemporary.

War is obscene, nasty and brutal to all involved, and despite best efforts, always finds a way to be such.

Robin Kestrel - 2010-10-23

Hey, remember when President Obama made a special trip to trip to CIA headquarters on 4/20/09 to reassure them once again that "there will be no prosecutions or investigations" in regards to torture, rendition, etc.? When he said it was time to admit "mistakes" and "move forward"?

Yeah, that was pretty cool.

augias - 2010-10-24

Can you imagine how much political support he'd lose and bullshit from the hawks he'd have to face if he did. Poor bastard's making unsweetened lemonade out of dung.

Cena_mark - 2010-10-24

Give me a fucking break. That was one of the few good things Obama did. Our CIA can't protect us if they fear going to jail for making some heartless terrorist uncomfortable. Let the CIA do their job.

kingofthenothing - 2010-10-24

Cena, it's that time again, to open up your skull and scrape the fuzz off what's left of your brain. The mushrooms have taken over.

Robin Kestrel - 2010-10-24

No one needs to enable, commit, or cover up war crimes in order to protect our security.

Nithing - 2010-10-24

Yeah the right might start giving Obama a hard time if he didn't give them a break on a little torture and murder.

kingarthur - 2010-10-24

Shocker! War kills women, children, other innocent people.

At least maybe this will let us drop the bullshit niceties and really talk about it.

Pillager - 2010-10-24

When was Saddam at his worst?

When Reagan supplied him with the weapons he used on Iranians & his very own people.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r42oejmpkgw

"15 months after the massacre in Du'jail for which Saddam was eventually hanged in 2006, Reagan's Special Envoy to the Middle East, Donald Rumsfeld is in Iraq is shaking Saddam Hussein's hand"

When others commit war crimes it is considered an atrocity.

When we condone torture & slaughter countless masses without remorse, it's no big deal.

Toenails - 2010-10-24

Does this mean I have to go to jail.

Cena_mark - 2010-10-24

No, you did nothing wrong. In fact all you did was right.
