The Dead weren't as far off from that as you might think, at least during their speed-and-heroin phases (i.e. everything except about 1964-72). They just had the money to delegate the work to their crew, who were hard-assed biker types that beat people up as needed (there's a story of a journalist or exec or something being hung out a hotel window by his legs for example).

It was semi-daring back when dressing like a hippie would get the shit beat out of you, and all the Yippies thought they were going to change everything instead of getting old.

But seriously, speed, heroin, and biker gangs did more to finish off San Francisco hippies than The Man ever could have, or so says a lot of cultural scribes who were around at the time. They potentaite each other.
