i was there! and it was good. i was back by the national art gallery and could barely hear anything, but i did get to pose with two guys dressed as ICP who had a giant "fuckin' government, how does it work?" sign.

shithouse crazy turnout though, hope some of you made it as well. especially you, cena.

cognitivedissonance - 2010-10-31

Beck's niminy piminy response, as I predict it:

*sneering "Aren't I so cool, folks? Don't I get it?" sound in his voice*"Well, MEEEESTER STEW-ART BIN LIEBOWITZ, you are MORE THAN WELCOME to restore SANITYYYY right heeeeeeeeeeeeeeere where I've got a seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeat ready for you... but... *turns to camera* I don't think Jon Stewart loves. This. Country. *crocodile tears* AS MUCH AS I KNOW YOU... AND I.... AND OUR DEAD GRANDPARENTS... DO. *pounds fist on copy of "Pearl of Great Price"*"

Riskbreaker - 2010-10-31

Then it's all images of pie charts showing how many TROO HARDCORE americans hate Stewart and how many hippie fags love him.

StanleyPain - 2010-10-31

Nah, it'll just be more of the same bullshit meme about how comedians and humorists aren't allowed to say anything meaningful or serious or criticize anyone because it's "not their place" to actually try and enter the national dialogue. The usual "it's OK if a conservative had done the exact same thing" but because it's someone on the left side of things, it's a combination of a Hitler Youth rally, the apocalypse, and a drug addled orgy, all at once.

Hammer Falls - 2011-08-05

Beck is afraid of Stewart and never addresses anything he or Colbert does directly.

Caminante Nocturno - 2010-10-31

I was close enough to hear this perfectly. It is one of the most sensible things I have ever heard about modern America.

Bort - 2010-10-31

Glad you went! Please tell me you made a sign.

Xenocide - 2010-10-31

I wish I could have gone, but watching it on TV with a dozen friends wasn't bad at all. There was a standing ovation for this speech.

The Hierophant - 2010-10-31

There were forty people at the simulcast in SF; I walked through it on the way to the grocery store. One guy came up to me and asked me if I was interested in politics, and I said no.

It would have been more fun if people showed up.

RockBolt - 2010-10-31

I was halfway out in the crowd, but had a good view of the screens and could hear it all loud and clear. Great show and a great crowd of people to be amongst all day

Hammer Falls - 2010-10-31

Here's a better quality version, without all the strange C-SPAN crowd shots. Plus, Tony Bennett.

And remove the space between the 'e' and 'd' in "embedded".

Bort - 2010-10-31

The one thing I didn't enjoy is the (implied) false equivalence that Keith Olbermann is as big of a problem as, say, Glenn Beck. But I suspect that was a deliberate decision: if you want to lure people back to sanity, you need to adopt a "now I'm not pointing fingers at anyone in particular" tone. Once people have wandered back into sane mental territory, they can figure out for themselves who is fostering the crazy and in what degree.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-10-31

FWIW I came away enlightened, as well as somewhat embarrassed of my own divisive actions. This was precisely because they took the time to include KO, etc all, and remind us that fear-based hyperbole isn't (to paraphrase Rush) "the sole provenance of the right."

Also, the existence of the rally is already a pretty strong commentary on the damage Fox has done, so I'm glad that the stated message was an inclusive one. And it will make it that much funnier when they try to find some outrageous thing to pin on him, given how unassailable this was.

to those in attendance: awesome. thank you for doing that. hope you had fun.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-10-31

*etc all

jesus

Robin Kestrel - 2010-10-31

This moved me. He had a national stage, a world stage, and he said this. It's so fucked up that it's gotten to the point where it needs to be said, but it clearly does, and Stewart didn't waste a word.

memedumpster - 2010-10-31

Five for Jon Stewart.

I am one of those loud hateful people he is talking about in that I am saying that John Stewart is wrong, the right needs to be stamped out like an unruly campfire and buried under dirt, and his speech about us erroneously being the same will destroy progress as fast as when Obama decided to give up on hopey-changey stuff and "reach across the aisle."

The Republican Party owes Stewart some money for this speech.

*posted in memory of cena, who could not be here to troll*

Bort - 2010-10-31

I think Stewart's speech was directed towards those people who have forgotten what sanity in politics is supposed to look like, the people who have been watching Fox for so long they've forgotten that the function of news is to inform rather than inflame. Step one is to win them back to sanity. Step two is to get them thinking about politics through the lens of sanity, and step three will hopefully be something we can live with. But step one has to come first; the stamping can occur while steps two and three are underway.

Bort - 2010-10-31

Also, consider the notion / debate / argument as to who the "real" Americans are: conservatives or liberals. It's been going on since before Reagan's time. Well, Stewart has reframed the issue so that it's not right / left, but sane / insane. If that catches on, that will put the country in a much better position to deal with issues constructively.

jangbones - 2010-10-31

I thought it was outstanding

Wow there were a lot of people there
