The new opening is epic meh-ery. Methinks The Simpsons hasn't been good since the 17th season, and I haven't even bothered watching since the 19th. I mostly stick to torrents nowadays. [The DVDs? Besides the extras (some of which are, indeed, epic), relying on outdated physical storage is the "Worst. Idea. Ever.")]

revdrew - 2010-11-01

That's a pretty good Comic Book Guy impression.

(Christ I hope that was a Comic Book Guy impression)

Old_Zircon - 2010-11-01

The Simpsons hasn't been good since the 3rd or 4th season, chief.

freedoom - 2010-11-01

I still watch out of tradition.

fluffy - 2010-11-01

"You Only Move Twice" was season 8.

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2010-11-01

Only 3rd or 4th? Are you serious? No "Cape Feare" or "Radioactive Man"? I think you're mixing up your seasons. Season 9 is when it began to suck hard.

Toenails - 2010-11-02

As long as the season is funnier than that abortion of a first season, I'm satisfied.

That said, sometime around the 15th season the comedy started making me feel sad inside :(

Harveyjames - 2010-11-02

Season 7 is pretty fucking great, you guys

elixer - 2010-11-02

Well soon after season 8 or 9 a lot of the original writers disappeared and there was a pretty abrupt drop in quality. Or maybe someone spiked my Squishy.

Hooker - 2010-11-01

Who decides that the intro to The Simpsons needs to be jazzed up?

theSnake - 2010-11-01

They added this when they moved to HD. Its not a huge deal.

Hooker - 2010-11-01

No, I don't think so either. I'm just wondering who looked at the old Simpsons intro and decided there wasn't enough stuff going on.

Toenails - 2010-11-02

A team of marketers.

jangbones - 2010-11-02

they had to update it to HD

they took the opportunity to add some jokes

wow

Hooker - 2010-11-02

Oh, poeTV. Will you ever grow out of your polemics?

RockBolt - 2010-11-01

I haven't watched this show in years, but this just hurts my soul

Space Helicopter - 2010-11-01

They Changed It Now It Sucks (TM)

Desidiosus - 2010-11-02

Ruined FOREVER

Riskbreaker - 2010-11-01

Sometimes less is more, and more is just way way less.

IrishWhiskey - 2010-11-01

This.

I'm not bothered that they changed the intro. I love the old Simpsons, and just recognize that the modern show simply isn't for me. But even without any nostalgia, the new intro is overcrowded and overdone. They could have updated the old animation, or done something new to recognize the change, and instead made the mistake of trying both.

Goofy Gorilla - 2010-11-01

What's the difference again?

lustygoat - 2010-11-01

at least they didn't change the music

Robert DeNegro - 2010-11-01

Should I state the obvious? Six of one...

RocketBlender - 2010-11-01

Could use a 'Trying too hard' tag.

spikestoyiu - 2010-11-01

When posting your comment, please don't forget to state when you stopped watching and/or when you think it stopped being "good" (protip: the earlier the season, the more awesome you look).

Rum Revenge - 2010-11-01

I stopped watching when they stopped being shorts on the Tracy Ulman show.

Buggerman - 2010-11-01

I stopped watching it after the very first episode. They should compress it more instead of selling out and going HD.

sosage - 2010-11-01

I stopped watching after the first blue pencil sketch.

Xenocide - 2010-11-02

I stopped watching one quadrillionth of a second after the Big Bang, when the atoms which would eventually form Matt Groening first entered our universe. I could just tell they'd end up disappointing me some day. Fuck those atoms.

Adramelech - 2010-11-02

I've never watched The Simpsons and the show has always sucked.

Cut yourself on that edge, nerds.

Lindner - 2010-11-02

Who are the Simpsons? They sound particularly boring...

Hay Belly - 2010-11-02

I stopped watching after they turned from bunnies into humans.

Son of Slam - 2010-11-01

It seems like a cargo cult approach. It was funny once, we don't know why, so we're just going to try to reference everything at once in the hope that we'll hit oil again.

Jet Bin Fever - 2010-11-01

More stuff on screen means more laughs. Looks like someone went to the George Lucas school of art direction.

Spit Spingola - 2010-11-01

I know people shit on the first season of The Simpsons but the original intro actually looks like it was drawn by people. They've really stiffened things up over the years, just one of the things that's sucked the humanity out of this show.

This show and Family Guy will still be on TV long after I'm dead. You'll have to shoot them in the head to kill them.

Tom Collins - 2010-11-01

The Simpsons have officially transitioned from Scooby Doo, Where are You? to The All-New Adventures of Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo.

The new opening titles will help countless generations to change the channel.

Rosebeekee - 2010-11-02

Xenocide - 2010-11-02

OLD THING GOOD.

NEW THING BAD.

OLD THING GOOD.

NEW THING BAD.

Riskbreaker - 2010-11-02

Somebody give a good argument as to why the new seasons don't suck, and why anyone should care about them. Something beyond the "but, it's the simpsons!"

Toenails - 2010-11-02

BECAUSE THE NEW SEASON DOESN'T HAVE ANY OF THE EPISODES I WATCHED GROWING UP!!!!

CharlesSmith - 2010-11-02

QUALITY IS AN ILLUSION! ALL THINGS ARE THE SAME!

charmlessman - 2010-11-02

Because I've laughed watching them.
QED

cognitivedissonance - 2010-11-02

We sure care a lot about cartoons.

Oktay - 2010-11-02

Genius at work.

Harveyjames - 2010-11-02

The thing I want you guys to notice is how boring the colour styling is now, and how less playful they are with physical space- the ceilings around marge's head at 0:32 no longer bend, for example. It sounds small, but these are pretty emblematic of how boring and mechanical the art direction is now.

The best thing I heard someone say about old vs. new Simpsons was this: in the old days, an episode might end with Homer and Marge riding off into the sunset. Now it ends with Homer firing a blowdart into Marge's neck.

charmlessman - 2010-11-02

Dear Everyone,

Things change.
Steve Ditko and Stan Lee don't make Spider-Man any more.
Tom Baker isn't Dr. Who any more.
Sean Connery isn't James Bond any more.
Mr. Hooper died years ago.
Steve Burns is making music now.

The Simpsons isn't the same as it was. It does not mean that is sucks. It merely means you don't like the new stuff. Some people do. Some people may even prefer it over the old stuff. Some people may have never stopped liking The Simpsons.

Quit acting like Grandpa.

Charmless Man

Hooker - 2010-11-02

"The Simpsons isn't the same as it was. It does not mean that is sucks. It merely means you don't like the new stuff."

The dumbest argument I've heard on poeTV in months.

charmlessman - 2010-11-02

The dumbest rebuttal I've had in a while.

It's dumb because it merely states an opinion but does nothing to support it.
Y'know, like I just did?

Harveyjames - 2010-11-02

I don't like the new stuff for a number of pretty good reasons, and they can all be summed up by me saying 'it sucks'

I guess the reason it's hard to just accept that it's 'just different' now is because by continuing, the show is sabotaging its own legacy. For instance, if Mad Magazine had ended in the 60's it'd be remembered as the untouchable classic it was, rather than this lame-ass thing that gets made fun of in the lame-ass Simpsons.

Hooker - 2010-11-02

It wasn't a rebuttal, it was a statement.

Quad9Damage - 2010-11-02

Well... I guess since the show has been on for over 20 years, it makes sense to use animation that's not from 1989.

... They really need to cancel this show.

Riskbreaker - 2010-11-02

My position is simple: i stopped watching the simpsons a long time ago because i didn't find them funny anymore. As simple as that, having "new" or "old" gags or whatever you people read as such is not a problem. It's not a nostalgia issue, the problem is, once more, that i don't find them funny anymore.

thebaronsdoctor - 2011-08-11

Man, the animation on the new HD opening is really stiff and boring.

I think it's kind of a good example a lot of animated shows have suffered from since computers started being a big thing in the animation industry: They're too concerned with being "on-model" which means a lot of dudes in the industry are afraid to do those crazy inbetweens that make things look lively.

Also back in my day we drew all our cartoons by hand and they only cost a nickel

Nominal - 2023-04-30

The Simpsons started sucking shortly after Phil Hartman died, which was also the time a lot of the original writers left.

You could see the slide into self-indulgent fandom as those original writers were replaced by ones who grew up fans of the show.
