When I was a kid, I threw out my Rat King action figure. I don't feel bad about it.

Xenocide - 2010-11-13

Evil atheist strawman? Have you been hanging out with those "every Pixar movie has eight billion layers of subtext" kids again?

Shanghai Tippytap - 2010-11-13

I saw the movie as more of a critique of selfishly upholding social inequalities than anything related to atheism, but I guess it depends what angle you're coming from.

fedex - 2010-11-13

those guys @ Pixar all read way too much Ayn Rand

Xenocide - 2010-11-13

Cars is an allegory about how industrialization has dehumanized us all, and about how our tendency to define ourselves by our possessions, such as cars, has turned us INTO those possessions. All the characters in Cars are actually human beings.

Also, A Bug's Life is about apartheid.

And Ratatouille? It's about a rat who learns to cook, stupid.

memedumpster - 2010-11-13

Is this fanfiction?

dueserpenti - 2010-11-13

I just saw this movie last night because A) I've been wanting to see it, and B) this "Evil Atheist" thing was also trotted out by one of the dumber posters at PoE-News and I was curious to see if there was anything to it. Turns out the strawman is not so much a straw man as a bale of hay for which a couple of people have hallucinated arms and legs. I'm not going to go on about the nature of the bear's bitterness and loss of idealism, because the exegesis of a cartoon movie is beneath me, but any analogy to atheism is an instant failure for anyone not suffering from a combination of persecutory delusions and deep, profound stupidity.

Great movie, though.

memedumpster - 2010-11-13

Cool exegesis, bro.

baumer - 2011-05-08

Oh wow.

You clearly don't like me, and it's fairly obvious that it's something personal rather than some high minded bullshit about high school vocab. I'm sorry for whatever I did to you, man. It was not my intent to be hurtful.

Here's the thread he's talking about, where you can see what I had to say about religious themes in this movie:

Here's him giving me shit elsewhere (and missing badly again) for being a "radical atheist":

Macho Nacho - 2010-11-13

Jesus, I could argue that Toy Story 3 is about the Holocaust and that makes more sense than the Evil Atheist Strawman.

fluffy - 2010-11-13

You could argue it being about gay bathhouses and the HIV epidemic and it'd make more sense than the Evil Atheist Strawman.

Mike Tyson?! - 2010-11-13

So do they all die or what?

fluffy - 2010-11-13

They get rescued by the Aliens Ex Machina.

Squeamish - 2010-11-13

You can argue all you want about the onion-like layers of meaning in the movie, but my inner manchild teared up at this scene.

James Woods - 2010-11-13

Evil Atheist strawman? What the eph are you talking about? You're thinking Big Idea productions, not Pixar.

Oscar Wildcat - 2010-11-13

five stars for pointing out to a culture obsessed with material possessions and unable to make even the most basic of human connections, that when life ends the only thing of any value are those human connections.

kingarthur - 2010-11-14

EXACTLY. Now what is this "evil atheist strawman" bullshit they speak of? Because I really really really didn't get that out of the film.

RocketBlender - 2010-11-13

Why did you vote your own submission down in the hopper?

Ursa_minor - 2010-11-13

I was not expecting this scene. I saw it on a plane and when it got to this part, my tear ducts started throbbing. It was the last thing I was expecting. I had to burn out at every stop light and make David Lee Roth-style googly eyes at every woman's ass I saw afterwords just to make up for it.
Rough.

Ursa_minor - 2010-11-13

It's really the little horse struggling that did it to me.

IrishWhiskey - 2010-11-13

L O S T

Walker - 2010-11-17

Shed a tear for Charlie.

PhunkThisNoise - 2011-07-12

I didn't really tear up at this part at all. Maybe I'm heartless.

Or maybe I had already guessed what was gonna happen the moment I saw the aliens go after the claw.

And I wish this had been an actual promo for the movie. How awesome would that have been?
