I think there's more too it than that.

Christian celebrities and motivational speakers almost always talk about mistakes they've made ranging from drugs, sex, atheism and Satanism. And they say this even if it isn't true. Partly at least because part of the fundamental message of Christianity is "you are worse off for your sin, and you will get better through faith". Redemption sounds better when it comes from a darker place. Bristol is a stronger person for sinning and coming to God, than someone who never sinned.

But I don't think that's it either...

This may sound cynical, but I think the appeal of Sarah Palin in the Tea Party conservative movement is more about her flaws than her strengths. Obama was tagged as an elitist, not in spite of his race, poverty and struggles in life, but because of them, or rather because he successfully overcame so much to became an educated, successful man. He is actually elite, in the sense that he's accomplished so much, and that makes him less relatable, and others feel inadequate. Sarah Palin on the other hand makes no pretensions at intelligence, and in fact constantly states how "ordinary Americans" know much better than the experts and educated. Her only success is the sort of fame that most Americans dream of; showbiz popularity without the effort. Her supporters can relate to Sarah, but they don't feel inadequate when compared to her.

Nah. Popular fundamentalism seems to love throwing people under the bus, but take the complete opposite approach with Bristol. It's fucking retarded, and it makes me hate them.

They wouldn't be going gaga over Bristol if she weren't Sarah Palin's daughter.

I think IrishWhiskey is on to something: it's one thing to mouth all the appropriate Jesus teachings, but actually setting a good example would make you some kind of an asshole. Far better to get the Jesusy pleasantries out of the way so everyone can agree that Jesus is Lord, then get back to the real business of being a polite right wing prick.
