How, exactly, is animal sacrifice primitive and contemptible? The animal is killed just like it would be for its meat or fur--in fact, the procedures required by Dhabihah are about as humane as it gets in the exsanguination business.

Do you honestly think that sacrificing animals to god(s) is not a primitive practice?

Admittedly, I should have used a more apt adjective than "contemptible;" perhaps "retarded."

wtf japan - 2010-11-18

Depends on what you mean by "primitive." I suspect that you also mean "contemptible."

We "civilized" people still rape, enslave, sacrifice, castrate, and cling to superstitions, you know. We just do them in a more "sophisticated" (sublimated) manner. We fancy our civilization to be more highly developed than "primitive" cultures, though it could just as easily be described as a monstrous deviation from "normal" tribalism.

In any case, these people are not running around slaughtering animals willy-nilly and for no purpose other than to please Allah. They actually eat the meat. The ancient Greeks, Israelites, and Muslims all eat/ate their animal sacrifices. The only difference between an animal sacrifice in these cultures and the routine slaughter of animals that goes on in our "civilized" culture is that those cultures believe that their god(s) also enjoy and want to share in the event--and it is/was an event--that is the preparation and consumption of meat. If anything, the fact that these cultures treat the slaughter of animals reverentially seems to me to be (at least poetically, if not morally) superior to our factory slaughterhouses and the thoughtless gobbling of meat "products."

What is most revolting about the content of the clip is not the ritual sacrifice of animals, but the fact that "civilization" has intruded to the extent that someone has figured out how to make it profitable--and therefore base and meaningless.

You kill an animal and give its meat to the poor for Eid al-Adha. The middleman can answer to his own conscience. I doubt anyone arranging a sacrifice online is going to actually personally eat the meat of the animal sacrificed.

Someone once told me that sacrifice is one of the earliest examples of art because, like art, it's wasteful for wastefulness' sake.

Five stars for the little picture of the sacrifice-to-be on the webpage.

art would have no aesthetic if it weren't for its inherent uselessness...so yes, I would agree on philosophical levels. I just prefer my art to have a bit less blood-letting.

This is one of those times when St. Paul was right.
